  • What does it mean to you that in sacred architecture an architect can find the essential and ultimate reason for his/her craft?

It means for me that the architect will live and express his deepest values by creating meaning through form.

  • great reflection

  • I was really interested in this notion of Venice being a wonder, an example of the city we all want (without knowing it) and at the same time a low quality product — that's just a fascinating mix of concepts referring to one single place.

The fact that Venice portrays all the aspects we long for in a city is such a poignant truth, which I'd like to...

  • I've lived in Venice for a full month in a non-touristic neighborhood — wonder is the word that comes to mind ... At that time they were screening the Venezia Film Festival at the Lido Island. It was a true pleasure to me to take the boat every evening and indulge in cult movies.

I truly love that city, an if you know where to transit, you can get away...

  • My reference city is New York City : it has 5 boroughs, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan has very clear limits, due to the fact it is an island.
Brooklyn and Queens and expanding East in terms of demographics, but won't be able to expand further when they reach again the coast line.
Bronx can potentially merge with upstate...

  • I did actually smile Hester lol

  • I grew up in was raised in a big city (Sao Paolo) and after living 8 years in New York I'm definitely a city guy. However, weekend trips to villages or even short term trips seem quite surprising and relaxing in its way and usually portray a meditative aspect to me.

  • actually you may inhabit leisure places too, only for a shorter period of time — in that sense everything an architect projects will entail human habitation, would anyone agree?

  • makes sense, my answer was similar

  • Because human beings spend the majority of their time inhabiting spaces like home or work spaces; and proportionally less time in leisure spaces i.e. Museums, Theaters etc...

  • I see @StefanoTardini — Could you send me link for the bachelors program at USI then? How many years does it take? Is it really long?

I have diplomas and work experience on Advertising, Design and Photography. I am working as a creative consultant for an Engineering / Architecture firm in San Paolo to promote their urban developments. However I've been...

  • personal expression is cool and makes sense

  • arrival, peace, inner connection

  • @StefanoTardini I'm so excited at the end of week one that I was going to ask you if USI offers any type of certificate program or bachelors online in Architecture? Or do you know of... any university that does?

Unless to study architecture online is not even ethical from the point of view of education. Could you please advise? Grazie!

  • I really enjoyed the exposure of such interesting subjects, specially:

    • interaction between light and gravity blew my mind forever
    • the spiritual aspect of architecture
    • the real commitment of architecture and the architect's role as a thinker and creator of a collective rapport by design.

    thank you all

  • me too! such an amazing article

  • For me, without light, the "perception of space" does not exist (maybe its easier to understand that way).

I love the idea of using "light & gravity" notions when interpreting architectural work to read current interests and contradictions present in our society. That certainly creates meaningful or meaningless rapports, depending on the vigor and...

  • really like your comment Lyn. Not many people talk about the "why" of light, and the AlHambra place clearly examples you point.

the metaphor for enlightenment is a fair notion too.

  • I've never really spent too much time thinking about my favorite material, but intuitively I think of titanium, due to its moldable nature and fierce reflective power, as in Gehry's Bilbao.

  • "Architecture today often abdicates one of its primary functions: to orient us in space." — I really love that

  • What does it mean that architecture is a form of human expression?

That the author will leave his imprints in all that he/she touches or does. That can be as intentional as an artist would approach it, or less intentional as maybe a less sensitive person would do it.

Whichever way chosen, the architectural result will reflect that personality, character...

  • Which are the roles and responsibilities of an architect?
I believe an architect can make the world more fantastic and astounding by creating dramatic impact through shape and form, in the name of human needs (function).

  • that's an interesting definition Andrea, what would you say is an immaterial need in this case?

  • for sure!

  • makes total sense — to build the void around us as something we don't consume directly

  • vision — the capacity to see further
meaning — the vision needs to deeply signify to the architect and others
connection — the meaning connects everyone to the environment

  • Hi, I'm Flavio de Zorzi — I'm an advertising creative highly interested in Architecture due to my Engineering client. I live between New York City and Sao Paulo.

My connection with architecture has to do with Beauty and Immersion. I love to experience architectural design when in contact with an awe-inspiring building or monument.

    I choose the chapel...

  • really excited too!!
