The third student said 'I can read OK in my mind'. Does that mean that some dyslexics are actually fluent when reading to themsleves, without having to pronounce the words?

I thought I had never had a student with dyslexia before. Looking back now, I feel kind of ashamed to think that some of my former students who I thought lazy or disinterested might actually have had a difficulty, and I failed them! :(

I hadn't thought about attention span (I can understand problems with attention span when reading; does it also apply to listening?), time management and organisation skills.

That's an interesting question. My first langauage is Spanish and the spelling-sound correspondance is quite straightforward. I know Spanish speakers with dyslexia, though.

I am a graduate teacher of Engliah as a Second Language. I hold a BA degree in English Language and I have specialized in English Phonology.
I teach ESL in secondary school and private institutions. I am also a teacher trainer at college in the area of Phonology.
