Shows how important a support system is .

  • Sorry to hear that ,hope you find a route out of it ;one step at a time .

  • Hola Tina .

  • Hola todos ,me llamo Mattie, viva en Galway .

  • Rapido ...

  • That’s sounds really tough .

  • Our bodies and minds are interlinked , how we ever thought otherwise is baffling.

  • That’s sounds really tough.

  • All this makes me in awe of our bodies .

  • I find the image of ‘the monk ‘ very comforting .

  • I’m a curious person ,I love the idea of psychology ,Buddhism, health, etc all bumping up together and creating something .

  • I’m hoping to develop a daily meditation practice ,and practice slow reading, cooking, gardening, listening especially listening .Even addressing the above questions has been helpful, thanks .

  • Do they take mature students ? Everybody looks aged 12 , except the cross librarian .....

  • 3.93

  • Thank you ,good advise .

Mindfulness brought clarity to my life .I am more relaxed ,enjoy life more, I am more compassionate ( I think ) and have learned to surf the difficult times ( not all the time but a lot of the time ) I’m doing this course to help me reflect again on mindfulness and continue to understand it and incorporate it into my life .Warm wishes to you all.

  • Thank you to all.I would like to share a mindful moment with you .I read a short story called ;Half A Minutes Silence by Maurice Baring ,it’s a beautiful story about a Russian custom whereby on leaving a house or starting out on a journey ,all involved sit down and spend half a minute in silence .I do it now before setting out on significant journeys ,really...

  • Thank you Oscar ,I’m trying to figure out where mindfulness can help with relationships and not spill over into therapeutic ?

  • Hello Laetitia, I was in the same position a year ago and used a book/ cd called Mindfulness for Health , it helped me meditate with pain and discomfort and even helped the pain.

Positives ..not really worrying so much about what people think ,just doing your own thing ,listening to age inappropriate music ,dressing how you like .
Negatives ,include feeling vulnerable and always having to weigh things up .

  • I’m having difficulty figuring out Number 3 ....

  • Before I get rid of something I was attached to ( like my dear old Dads 30 year old Aran sweater ) I take a photo of it hanging on a white wall .A sort of decluttering and the photos are a joy .

  • ‘Adept ‘, is very helpful ,especially the P for perseverance , I practice most days ,things have improved for me when I stopped expecting changes / results every day but just keep going with it .

  • Sally ,prob. best for her is to work with a physio who has an interest in this area . I have found aqua aerobics wonderful to start with ( I'm a patient not a Physio) ,now I have moved on to exercise bike and short walks plus a series of weight bearing exercises ,swimming I do because I love it ,awaiting a Tai Chi class in my area .The message I get is keep...

  • Best of luck Angela ,I was in a sim.position a while ago and found the ‘comma ‘meditation so helpful ,did it a few times a day after parking my car and before I tackled the stressful event ..etc

  • Thanks for clarifying .

  • We live in a multitasking world ..I’m retired and when somebody asks what I did this morning and I say “ just pottered about ‘, that can be frowned upon ,looks to me like it’s more acceptable to be overstretched and stressed . I don’t mind I’ll continue to find time to potter about .

  • I agree Anne , I think the very act of writing a list slows our thoughts .

  • Following on ...is difficult .

  • I’m ambiguous about total mindfulness, sometimes it’s lovely to have a little daydream . To live mindfully all the time ( last nights news would be an example) .

  • Not sure I understand this test ,if it turns out patient has poor grip strength can anything be done about it ? Or is this something that is fixed .Surely somebody who works physically like a farmer would have a stronger grip that an office worker ? But doesn’t necessarily mean they are healthier ?

  • One of the paths to sedentary lifestyle is injury . It is difficult to source exercise progs if you have an injury .

  • I love this exercise ,also Mark Williams has a Three Minute Breathing space ,I do it regularly in my car .

  • I find it impossible not to get distracted ...but harder still is not judging myself when it happens ...

  • I have joined this course again because I gotten so many benefits from it but now I have lots of questions / queries about it all .Meditating alone can be a tad isolating too.Looking forward to next few weeks ,thank you all in advance ,and all the best with the course .Its wonderful .

  • I'm finding the 'comma ' really helpful .I sometimes do Mark Williams '3 minute Med ' ,sitting in my car before a meeting / arriving home/ shopping .Just a breathing space between activities .

  • Yes Steve ,I have and I'm trying to figure out the difference between mindfulness and TM .

  • Apart from anything else ,not being mindful while having a conversation with someone is hurtful (. Even if unintential ) .I have to practice not doing this .

  • Is ' multitasking ' a personality trait or a habit ? Some people like to whizz around doing lots of things simultaneously and others like to methodically do one thing at a time .

  • I'm so glad and grateful for this video and comments today.I was with my gp earlier and have been scolding myself ever since. Why didn't I ask her this and that...? Why wasn't I more assertive ? etc ..Why do I turn into a jibbering wreck as soon as I enter a surgery? It has changed the whole experience around for me ,looking at it without ( well, less )...

  • I'm looking forward to this ...teasing out what stress is ,where it comes from in our lives and having a look at it mindfully. I sometimes feel it can become a habit there in the background .

  • I'm finding that a short meditation in the morning is really beneficial for me ,helps me be more mindful throughout the day .

  • Thanks for that Natasha .Love Patrick Ness but haven't read this one yet.

  • I am coming to grips with 'wandering mind ',the next bit is harder ..judging myself for wandering mind and then I realize that letting go of that is such a relief .

  • Thank you for this Iris .

  • Yes ,I really agree with this ,it is difficult to start meditating when there is a 'catastrophe ' but if it's part of your every day routine it can be a refuge when times get tough .

  • Could we look at the Dan/ Sarah situation in a different way too . Instead of being negative about it ,say well my friend was lukewarm about meeting up ,she was busy or perhaps she just didn't want to meet up with me and didn't have the courage /manners to contact me .so what ! We all have days like that .It might not be all about me .Same with Dan ,so what...

  • Having sat in a critical care waiting room during the last few weeks ,(where there is a lot of anxiety around ). We ,strangers ,supported each other in a variety of ways .One suggestion I found really helpful was instead of saying at the end of the day "how am I doing?' ,I would say "How is Mattie doing?" It helped .I'm not sure if there is some psychological...

Sometimes I find it easier to acknowledge ,Oh yes I'm on a negative stream of thoughts and just accept them and then they fizzle out . I learned this from mindfulness.

  • I always go back to Jon Kabat-Zinns books .

  • How can we be sure of anything ?

  • Unless things register with the brain do we xperience them at all? Do we "see "with our eyes or brain ?

  • I'm eating chocolate and the sense of taste is dominating all other senses just now.

  • This was really interesting and informative but has left me wondering how anybody with Crohn's disease can thrive on a Mediterranean diet. Lots of fruit and veg. means lots of fibre which can be difficult for anybody with IBD . On the other hand these conditions mean lots of inflammation ( as I understand it ) so those of us with these conditions really need...

  • Just wondering does the research mention specific video -based system exercise ?

  • Sorry to hear that Mary, it's something I wonder about .How to fit in exercise if you are a carer or incapacitated oneself .Im hoping this course offers options .

Hello All, I'm doing this course because I'm really curious .Curious about what makes us who we are and how we see the world and those around us ,and the fact that people can have the same experiences but view them differently.

  • Yes ,I've been trying this and it's been working well for me . A member of my family is due to have surgery in the spring and I was ( and still do occasionally) having difficulty controlling my anxiety about it. It's working well and very helpful for me ,prob. best for "one big worry " but perhaps not for general anxiety .

  • I would really recommend Jon Kabat Zinns books and CDs ( also on u tube ) .Mark Williams is also wonderful ,full of compassion for ourselves and others .

  • Thanks ,I'm going to try this ...

Without a doubt my day is better if I meditate in the morning ,yesterday I woke up uneasy and couldn't put a finger on why ,but just observed that I was feeling uneasy and didn't go on searching for the why all day. ,the unease disappeared . Small step but powerful.

  • It is such a relief to let go of judgement .

Where does all this self criticism come from ? Is it learned ? Or just part of the human condition. On the other hand we all know people who never have a moment of self doubt ,I'm half in awe/ admiration of them .

  • Is it possible to be too aware ,moment to moment ? Would the realities of life be overwhelming or would we become completely self absorbed ?

  • How does mindfulness compare with Transendental meditation ? Anybody ?

  • I like this video and what's been expressed ,it gives me confidence in the course and that ,that the tutors are responsible teachers .

  • Looking forward to this and to learning how to incorporate mindfulness in to daily life.

  • I find freezing food fantastic, when I bake bread or a cake ,I slice it up and put most of it in freezer ,that way I'm less likely to have a second slice . I really don't find eating a healthy diet more expensive especially when I don't buy biscuits ,soft drinks ,ready prepared meals .Are people familiar with Jack Monroe s,100 delicious budget recipes ,her...

  • Food has become anxiety inducing for a lot of people with Ibd, Ibs, probiotics, prebiotics ,good fats ,bad fats etc and there appears to be a lot of conflicting advice and occasionally research contradicts itself.

  • Hi, I've never seen whey in shop bought yoghurt , is it the more liquid part of home made yoghurt?

  • I wonder if that includes eating the skin of potato / sweet potato ?

  • Sometimes I wonder if it's what we exclude from our diets ( cake, pastries, crisps etc) that makes us healthy rather than the wonder foods we hear about . Also I think quantity / portion size is also relevant ,just not eating too much .

  • What exactly is "form" please?

  • I'm interested in role food plays in Ibd ( Crohn's disease ,ulcerative colitis ) if any .Just read a book called Gut by Julia Enders and I'm in awe of the gut after reading it .

  • I agree with you Brendan ,women ( of a certain age) were not encouraged to have strong handshakes .I think this test has a lot of flaws for accurate readings .

  • I'm a little confused by this grip strength test. Is it to measure just strength? Or does it signify some underlying disorder if one doesn't get a good score .
As an aside ,I can imagine men would grip it strongly and women would give a little lady like squeeze ?

  • Hi Annette, I love my yoga ( mostly Iyenger ) but find Astanga way too intense . I have now settled on "Yoga for over 50s by Mary Stewart" and think it's the best ever for anybody who wants / loves to stretch .

  • Exercise helps with weight reduction so how can this be balanced with loss of weight that often comes with some cancers ?

  • I would be interested in that too Susan . The emphasis here appears to be mainly cardio and pulmonary .

  • Yes Carol ,that was exactly it .The medical knowledge is foremost of course but how the service is delivered and the people skills involved are really important .

  • I was very lucky that a Physio visited me very soon after abdominal surgery and when I look back this really helped me recover .Simple , clear ,instructions empowered me and gave me the motivation and confidence to help myself through exercise .

  • Is this condition similar to PAH ( pulmonary arterial hypertension ) ?
    Would similar exercise be recommended?

  • Using a pedometer makes me positively eager to go upstairs to get book/ hot water bottle .
I suspect some elderly people might not be interested in using a pedometer ( some younger people too ) I think it's best not to make presumptions either way .

  • Thank you Catherine ,I'm hoping to start resistance training ,lifting small weights ,I'd likes do it at home .The weights section in the gym is just too intimidating .All the Best.

  • That's a bit scary .

  • Thanks for that John, do you know any good DVDs or u tube videos that demonstrate resistance exercises ?

  • Yes me too ! But swimming has it's own benefits and is gentle on joints specially for those who can't jump .

  • I agree that people are busy busy busy , but a lot of us still manage to watch Tv , go on line for several hours a day .

  • It is awesome to have this evidence spelled out to us .

  • Yes, but which professional ? Doctors in general don't have the expertise ,personal trainers ? It depends on the trainer. So far I've only trusted phisios (post opp. )they appear to give consistent advise and know the body.

  • DVD s sound great ,any recommendations ? I look at u tube dance ( band et part, Fred and Ginger and Syd, ) would love to learn some dance moves myself .Looks like a fun way to fitness ) At the moment learning the breast stroke with the help of u tube ,surprisingly effective.

  • Sounds like a lot of fun Emma. I'm looking for tap dancing classes .

  • Me too Melanie ,regular walking is just amazing ,simple and effective and life enhancing.

  • Looks likes it takes a while to link exercise with enhanced health rather than resting if you have been unwell.

  • In my experience doctors rarely suggest exercise it always surprises me .

  • Hope you like it :

    A day so happy.

Fog lifted early, I worked in the garden.
Hummingbirds were stopping over honeysuckle flowers.
There was no thing on earth I wanted to possess.
I knew no one worth my envying him.

Whatever evil I had suffered, I forgot.
To think that once I was the same man did not embarrass me.

  • "Forgetfulness " by the American poet Billy collins is funny and reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously .

  • Obesity is obviously a problem ,but what about those of us who are underweight. Everything food wise appears to be about avoiding weight gain .There is a dearth of information about out how to put on weight a healthy way .
