  • @HannahGray thank you Madam

  • I wanted to do "BSc International Development and the Environment with Overseas Experience" is there an online program?

  • Interesting and informative course.....I like the spirit of participation by all parties involved (lectures and Participant)

  • Yes! the course has given me basic ideas on Environmental Justice, it has also exposed me to tool such as EJ ATLAS which i didn't know before the course...It has also widen my network and collaborations..Thanks to the organiser but course duration was very short to cover all modules adequately

  • @EmmaLewins I fell its not an easy one to develop....if not handle carefully this may cause division amongst the community themselves. Those that are on an opposing side and community members whose ideas were not included in the life plan will not be part of the process. (may feel to be left out in the process)

  • Not only in Nigeria. i think the entire Africa continent,,,,more especially in urban and periurban area. they would be a huge resistance from the government and in some cased your can be refer to as an "opposition part cadre" having said that, its the nice tool as it takes care of the concern as u have rightly put it , "it review their history, considers the...

  • I had a similar question in mind more especially in some case the this plan can be perceived as anti government program as it seeks "autonomy" autonomy to land, autonomy for right of resources, autonomy to education as said in the video.

  • True! and more especially where a woman told the Minister about her ancestral remains,,and she further said,"where is you ancestors borns here?" I think this was a tough question for the minister to answer...therefore it nefitable to consider and recognise the ancestral delink people may suffer as result of land grabbing action for the purpose development. The...

  • @ShovaThapaKarki they do Plan but maybe what lacks is consolidation of those plans so that plans can stand test of time.

  • The presentation was wholesome,, I have learnt on how do use EJ Atlas, i have gotten exposed to conflict around the world. This module has made a big impact in my Life.

  • I looked at lower Kihansi Dam in Tanzania and Tokwe-Mukosi in Zimbabwe Dam: Its dismayed to see biodiversity lose that happened, destruction of ecosystem and extinction of Kihansi spray toads..These toads were once a tourist attraction but its all gone sad indeed for these injustices done to the environment.

As for Tokwe its unfortunate that government...

  • I have not used this tool before but am yet to learn more about it, including challenges and danger of the tool if not well utilised..My fear is that if not well used people in power or Authority might use the same to fight against environmental justice by fine tune it to meet their needs

  • Thankx alot for PV model...but am yet to learn more about, how it works, challenge and how to target the right audience.

  • This worlds reguires policies and regulation that will support Environmental justice, we can only do that once we start recognising each other including ecosystem as part of the process of environmental conservation.

  • VINCENT MOFYA made a comment

I cant imagine the course would be so interesting.it touches on key aspects that makes ecosystem complete.
I have enjoyed the course in totality.
I wish i could be considered for undergraduate course in EJ

  • in my Country, Government forest management is slowly corrupting due to lack of instrument of power and resources by Forest Rangers to man vast reserved forests, urbanisation and selfish political motives of using using land to pursue political mileage

  • Having looked at Justice pyramid closely, I would suggest an addition of "Timing"among the 5 facets..My view is that we can have all these 5 in place (though not possible) if "timing" is bad all of them will corrupse.

  • These coal mining is committing environmental injustice as folows
    1. Coal mining will leave huge open pits lending the land suitable for other environmental habitants
    2. The both sites where power is generated and coal is mined are experiencing displacement ecosystem
    3. There will be incidences of air and land pollution and this might chock surrounding...

  • I like the interpretation of pyramid of justice. The 5 facet are all important but are rarely adhered to by perpetrators of environmental injustice.Depending on the motive behind,,people might recognise serval rights to a certain extent and ignore distribution and procure.Distribution is one of the facet that suffers a lot in this pyramid of justice and is a...

  • This module is superable...Civic sociateiety, Environmentalist etc have a lot to do in order for bioengineers are advancing in technology...They are now using Digital Sequencing to develop new varieties and are not willing to discuss this in CBD meetings.

one thing indeed they have forgotten is that, "they could not do Digital sequencing" without initial...

  • Biological conservation of ecology inevitable, they add value in balancing of the ecosystem. I always tell people this, "Environment belong to all of us including the generations to come" hence its important to conserve Environment now so that they can also see the beauty of nature...our ancestor conserved the environment,,, do we mean they had no financial...

  • correct many people have concentrated on climate change and are rarely talking about Climate justice. however you can further read about it on this link https://corpwatch.org/article/bali-principles-climate-justice

  • I agree with you. modernisation is a killer of indigenous knowledge of forest conservation. it doesn't take into account and appreciate the existence of local knowledge..
I presume not all local knowledge was bad or need to be modernised.

  • "Progress"," Development" and i think also "Contribution to GDP' these words are hazardous to environmental conservation. often time politicians are hiding in these words to comite Environmental injustices

  • Not only inadequate but also weak

  • when i look at this lecture and now very concern and worried as what will happen if forest is not conserved....we likely to trigger water deficit, wave heat and land heat as result of bad management of these resources.

  • TO IMPROVE FLUENCY OF ENGLISH. PEOPLE LAUGH AT ME FOR BLOCKEN ENGLISH I WRITE AND SPEAK.. CAN THIS COURSE HELP ME WRITE CORRECT SENTENCE AND GRAMMER

  • I have problem with English grammar, i expect to learn more on how to use the grame correctly and writing correct sentences is another challenge.. can this course help me to improve? am always shy to speak and write english because of my broken english i often use.

  • Thank alot Kelly for your comments and reference book provided.

  • most of rural community in many african countries are depending of forest for energy, farming and income generation. Unless sound sustainable land use technologies and forest use are adopted this problem will not end.

  • Dr, I want to agree with again that rosource right is a major conduite of conflicts and wars world over. In Zambia resource right is becoming a complex issue...often there is number of territorial claims between Chiefs and government more especially in urban areas where there is high incidences of urbanisation. Chiefs under the current land reforms are slowly...

  • Presentation by Dr Oliver is an important eye opener on forest management and uses.
it touches on important categories, (Cultural, regulations and provision) it also discusses governance of forest.

I want to agree with the presenter that there is cohesive between the forest governance and categories of forest management These two model are the source of...

  • True we cannot discuss water scarcity without understanding and contextualise water scarcity. For example; Zambia holds 40% SADC water board and yet incidence of water scarcity is high. (0ver 70% of the population have no access to water and proper sanitation) The country has enough water to cater for its citizens and supply the rest to our neighbours. Water...

  • Yes.. the course has change my perception of viewing environment. I dint Know there is massive conflicts going on all over the world to this extent as said in essays and shown in EJ Atlas.
I wish i could be considered in UEA's BSc in Environmental justice so that i can learn and understand more about this unique course EJ

  • VINCENT MOFYA made a comment

    the course is marvelous

  • And I doubt if there is replanting of tree to replace logged trees....if not taken carefully may exabate desertification.

  • Similarly in my Country similar practice is done by certain groups of People and is called "Chitemene" the system is detrimental to atmospheric Air, Soil, Water and existence of natural habitats. The system affects the behavior of soil, texture and soil conditions that alone is a threat to biodiversity. It also works against carbon sinks or "carbon...

  • It sad to see lose of life due to commoditized the water to fattening individual pocket on an expense of local community.

  • capacity building should not only done to communities but also to civic leaders, political leaders etc. Some of the decision made concerning the environmental boarders on lack of understanding of environmental long term implication of their decisions. can u extend this to multi-million companies who are the sore perpetrators of EJ for the benefit of fattening...

  • Thank-you! Am delighted to be part of week 3 and discuss EJ Atlas which i never knew exists.

  • EJ Atlas is vital tool that can be used for lobbying, guiding and reflexition. for examples; cases that has happened before can be used as reference for resolving similar conflicts in other parts of the worlds..(Chongwe residence used conflicts on nuclear plants that have existed somewhere else, dangers they paused to environment and its habitats, etc) this...

  • Doc! Thanks for the Atlas, It was user friendly..I checked on Kariba Dam (Southern Part of Zambia)...It depicted the true situation on the ground This problem is still there..The Dam generates electricity that develops other parts of the country leaving indigenous people living without electricity and are living in poverty, 80% people living in this power...

  • Doc can i have the access to this software of EJ Atlas. This will go a long way in lobbying policy makers to make decisive decision on EJ and other Environmental concerns. in my Country

  • Am overwhelmed with the tutorial on EJ Atlas....Truet speaking i never knew efforts of this magnitudes have been documented. Thanks for the organisers.

  • Good thinking and initiative... The EJ Atlas is such a tool that will help many people trend and occurrences of Environmental injustices happening around the world

  • from my views, exploitation of the resource and growing demand on fishing exabited need to put measure to control stock from depression

  • this an interesting case study which need to explore further

  • To add on what u have said,,,This has created depence on Fertilize and input support program FISP.. this program has killed Agro-biodiversity of crops, biological control, environmental conservation, and has promoted Green house emmission which is detromental to fight agains effects of Climate change.

  • am aware of this problem...its now problematic

  • Very sad story Angela! can u get intouch with me on +260965405961 i can link you to ZEMA and Auction Aid for further discussion on how best to combat that problem

That is the problem when we have visionless leaders in power..they legalise carder to open up small mining for the purpose of wining support without proper policy on handling after math mining...

  • Correct.. Justice is political......lack of standardise rules of governance of Environmental makes it verge to manipulate and twist it to benefit people with financial muscles and with people in authorities

  • the relationship between politician and environmental governance is "governance and perception" politicians see things differently.. they interest is out comes...they dont mind what procedures will be done to achieve their goal as long as thet attain their outputs its fine with them.

  • VINCENT MOFYA made a comment

I want to agree with my colleague #Skye Lintott. based on what is said on flute, where can indigenous people claim to be true owners of the land if they don't have titles...It seems with current laws, (developers with financial muscles are using land laws in which may may local community cannot legitimately claim there land without title deed).. my feel is...

  • only when people start appriciating ecology thats when they can understand the importance of the three.

  • very helpful

  • This is a complex issue,
    before I could decide on this matter. I have follow-up questions;
    1. Were tigers introduced to that forest before people have already settled there?
2.Did community inclounch the forest reserve as it is In Kafue national park here In Zambia
    3. have there been incidents of animal/human conflicts?

    Voluntary evacuation or not,...

  • I agree with Marian on lack of involvement of the community in decision making. this takes me back to the previous discussion on "Dimension of Justice" I feel there is need to define "development" in environmental just well. in various interaction with various developers and as an environmental advocate (most of them violet Procedure of carrying out...

  • This problem is not just in Sudan but also in various parts of the world..Currently the government of the republic of Zambia wanted to build the nuclear plant 2 Kilometer away from my residential area (densely populated with the population of 15 people/square meter)..Government official signed an agreement, did a land survey and chief office of environmental...

  • Apart from distribution, she also touched important element, "Recognition" most of environment injustice committed world over is lack of recognising and respect for citizens, Natural habits and roles they plays in the environment.

  • in my case, seed harmonisation is the biggest challenge in my country, Zambia belong to COMESA block agreement, which is introducing seed laws, farmers right and seed rights

    This has affects

    1. Community" the community is loosing power to their indigenous seed which they have been preserving from time in memorial. In most cases these seed are climate...

  • Dear Andreas my institution would like to partner with you to do more of the research on water and soil pollution in various water catchment areas. most of the water in my area is believed to have been contaminated due to heavy chemical use by commercial farmers, unplanned resettlement living on upper lands, lack of proper toilets (open defecation) and many...
