  • Nice to meet everyone joining us! Excited to learn more about you all.

  • Hi everyone, welcome to the course! My name is Dana and I will be here to support you along your online learning journey!

  • Hi Tim, I definitely agree. these should be everywhere and it provides a space for not only youth but, for adults as well to have that creative outlet where they can learn and apply so much of their learnings.

  • @ElenaJiménez I would say between the ages of 7-18 really.

  • Hi Fiona, that's a really great idea, your students will find many different ways and ideas to creatively build their robots in ways they never though of. There are more examples in this throughout the course, especially in the case studies.

  • Hi Tami, do you think if you reach out to them they would allow you to view the space?

  • Hi Helal, welcome, congrats on your decision, an awesome one at that too!

  • Hi Criss, welcome, you will be able to gain a lot from this course!

Hi Everyone! nice to meet you all!

  • Hi all, welcome to the Build A Makerspace course! There is a great course with a lot of great resources, how-tos, and case studies you will be able to learn from.

  • Great idea to ask parents, there's always a lot of leftover items lying around that would be great for makerspaces!

  • Agreed, becomes better when all involved have the passion for the project that you are working on.

  • Wow congrats and good luck!!

  • Hi Chantelle, I think that is a great way of approaching young ones who give up easily.

  • Hi Oreoluwai, that's awesome you were able to find a couple. Definitely reach out to the to see if they'll let you visit.

  • Hey, that's one more maker-space in Australia, sometimes it takes a couple more sparks to get a few more to open around.

  • Hi Terence, welcome to the course, your little ones will definitely be impressed by how much they can tinker and create with just regular items around them! I'm sure they'll be inspired.

  • Hi Victoria, thank you and welcome to the course!

Hi everyone, welcome to the course, it's very in depth and provides a lot of great context, details, and example to help you build an awesome maker-space for your learners. I'm Dana and I'll be hanging around to help out but, to also meet you all to hear about all the awesome stuff you are doing.

  • Awesome, this is great to hear!

  • Wow, that is incredible, what are some ideas that you have around reaching others in the ADHD and deaf communities?

  • How are the action plans coming along?

  • Great idea, then it's easy to see which materials you might want to expand on it and the ones that get used the least can definetly be incorporated into other projects like you said!

  • It is great to hear you have such an eager and amazing team behind you. Having team members like that makes the work a lot more easy and enjoyable!

  • Definitely check your local pharmacy!

  • What would help to change minds? Sometimes when people see things in action and how effective it is to the students, it's then they understand the impact that can be had

  • I think starting off small is the best way to go. Use what you have and add in some extra crafts supplies. Maybe you have some supplies lying around in your learning environment or even in some basement in your school that you could use.

  • Yes, controlled chaos is great to let students explore and allow them to make mistakes!

  • Welcome to week 2 everyone!

  • Awesome first week, see you all the next 2nd section!

  • Have you reached out to anyone in your network to help with volunteering or support? Sometimes the older kids you work can be considered an option as well.

  • Hi Lisa, that is a very important point you made there, there are many different ways to read and write and it is good to allow your students different ways of expression.

  • A really cool project, have you shown it to your students already?

  • That actually sounds like a good idea, any reusable resources you're able to find are good to use.

  • Wow that's awesome, I hope you have an awesome time and come back with great ideas!

  • That's great to hear that they are so close and there are plenty to check out to.

  • Hi Alex, it's great that you are volunteer, welcome to the course

  • Congratulations everyone!

  • Yes, great idea!

  • Wow, that is awesome Oscar!

  • What are some ways to you have seen that helps to keep them engaged or interested
    ?

  • Yes for sure, allowing the kids the space to try new ideas and concepts and also learning on fail on their own. Great way to learn

  • Yes, definitely!

  • Yes for sure!

  • That's a really great idea!

  • Curiosity for sure, keeps the mind going!

  • I think I know what you are talking, I have a faint memory of it but -yes this stem bus would be great to go to rural communities where young kids don't have access to these resources. It's great exposure.

  • Sounds like a plan!

  • That's a great way to start

  • If you are able to have older children who can participate or act as volunteers perhaps it can help with having enough supervision for objects and items the little ones can't use.

  • Congrats on completing your first week!

  • Really great idea and approach

  • Yes for sure, it's good to see many educators taking the initiative to make spaces for all students :)

  • That's an awesome idea!

  • I'm glad to hear this :)

  • It's one of the favorites, I'm glad you liked it!

  • Way to go!

  • That's amazing and all sounds like the kids have such a fun time! How much time do you get for these sessions an hour or so? Would you consider starting an after school program like code club to have more time to tinker?

  • Awesome

  • That's great, and you can introduce more and more concepts as they get ahead

  • Wow, that is so sweet! What was is that they made?

  • I've seen this happen and it is one of the greatest joys for sure.

  • That is really good

  • That is awesome, I hope you have a great time and learn a lot on your visit!

  • Woohoo!

  • if you are ever to make a trip that would be pretty cool. You could spend the whole day there. See if they would need any volunteers?

  • You will probably be the first then!

  • Wow that is awesome!

  • Welcome!

  • Australia, welcome!

  • Welcome!

  • That is really great vision, you're on the right path!

  • Welcome!

  • You can always start off small and collect as you go. You can also ask around or see if there is anything you may have that could be useful!

  • Great idea! A lot of craft stores have really cheap items that can be used at Makerspaces as well!

  • There is more to come in the next couple of weeks that go in depth on how to do that.

  • That is so cool, do you have support in building this makerspace?

  • You'll definitely enjoy this course!

  • That's really great that you are taking that initiative.

  • Library maker-spaces, awesome! You'll learn a lot through this course.
