  • Hi Ali, That's really improper. prudence and accountability still remains the pride of government.....so this concern that you ve flagged up raises an issue of ethical concerns.

  • Hi Thomas, you raised an interesting question on why Liberia is not at par with other countries in terms of construction. My first reaction would be that either this hasnt been a priority to 'the powers that be' in Liberia or there is a lack of information on innovative practices / benefits of construction and this is where research comes in. Conversely, if it...

  • I share in your point, Dumiso. The fact that politics is intertwined with the provision public good seems inevitable and pave ways to professional ethical concerns. Most Mega projects as you cited, give room for un ethical practice in areas of final cost declaration, particularly when there is a long timeline for project delivery, with obvious environmental...

  • Different methodologies can apply to address different contemporary issues in different setting. A good starting point is to think about the construct of the philosophical position and orientation towards your research. we make assumptions at every stage in the research process , either consciously or unconsciously and these assumptions fall under two major...

  • These are brilliant questions. Exploring these questions through conversations and interviews with either client, architect, and the project manager, will extend our individual thoughts/ knowledge about the complexities of this project.

  • I agree to the huge impact that lack of transparency can have in Construction as well as any other facets of life. In any project, there needs to transparency from start to finish.

  • @SATOSHIMORIMOTO Good to learn a bit of the work culture in Japan!. Japanese worker must really be strong and industrious. The government measure will certainly be a good idea as breaks are important to our general wellbeing.

  • My understanding is that the right practice is proposed here and from Ethics point of view, Workers act must be adhered to by the company. I perceive that the site workers are engaging in extra hours of work, possibly due to poor salaries. Is this a similar practice across other sectors in your country or is it just within the construction companies?

  • @KeithMcGraw I quite agree with you. The global market is really big and so construction companies must think about sustainable measure for competitive advantage and to remain attractive

  • @FrancisMcShane . what really can be done either from the government, industry and academia concerning shortage of skills? Do you think there is a role for these institutions in improving the issues you highlighted. Is construction itself not attractive or a rewarding career? what do you suggest, can be done to spice this area up?

  • Hi Kumar. Do you think research has a role to play in addressing these identified contemporary issues in your locality? or are they more political?

  • Fayomi, , I can see some of these contemporary issues being addressed through research. The rest of the issues seem to be politically instigated and a more visionary government with the right personnel for good governance can address these.

  • @IanJenkinson I like the questioning skills flagged up in 'managing traffic speed', which encapsulates the different philosophies that are applicable in researching construction. • I tend to agree that research within the construction industry lean towards quantitative approaches, but we also have seen recent studies involving not just numbers and figures but also reports from personnel and clients, attitudes as well as emotions. In this instance the data will be textual.
Why do you think Pragmatism is the best method in construction...

  • It can be difficult in getting the right data. what do think may have been responsible? could it be from the research question or is it from the instruments used for collecting data, the data subject or may be the validation process? Reflect on your previous experience of executing a research and Share your thoughts with the learning community.

  • Are there similar issues of transparency and ethical concerns in your locality? Do share some of your experiences with the learning community.

  • Thanks Opara for sharing your experience from your locality. The idea of a mono rail is brilliant but did the governor follow a due process of transparency with the monetary transactions? As that will be termed 'unethical' if he didn't.

  • I quite agree with you Opara. Instability in government affects a lot of projects, including construction. And in some developing countries like Nigeria there will be the associating cost over runs with projects as well as delays in execution due to change in government. However, there are more sustainable ways of reducing costs in construction which research...
