I don't think I have ever observed a lesson that hasn't had questions in it.   • Really interesting you chose "learners use one another as a resource". I think this one, for me, was the real eye opener when we began working on AfL with teacher. I really like Margaret Heritage's work on this in Phi Delta Kappan (2007). Its much more than peer assessment; its allowing students to co-constaruct and challenge one another's ideas.

    I think differentiation can be used with adults. I do not know the research literature in this area but generally it is better to give adults more choice in how they go about learning than younger students. Let us know how it goes in your classroom.

  • I always challenge my maths colleagues by asking them what would be the ONE question that would test if I could do Pythagoras? That's the sort of question you want that has specific thinking linked to that maths idea. Then think how kids might go wrong. From this you construct your distractors for your multiple choice.

  • Such a difficult topic. I admit I never really understood it till I had to teach it. There's a lot of research on misconceptions in this area and it might help to look at some groups who are producing diagnostic questions in this area like Robin Millar and Mary Whitehouse on the York Project in the UK.

In this way they rehearse their better ways of thinking and provide you with a further check on understanding. You have to keep working on sorting out the wrong ideas.   • Had to comment on this one as I have two research teams working on inquiry. Teachers are not using HPQs but the classroom assessment practices of the teachers have changed and we did have to help them develop or adapt different tools and protocols to do this.   • I agree with all the ideas above but do remember that it is not just about having a good question, it is also how you use it and what effect it has on learning and learners. So as well as sharing good hinge point questions, can those that use them let everyone know how and why they worked and what pitfalls to avoid.

  • I tend to find it easier in maths as you can often put up a range of answers that students might make if they make wrong assumptions. In science, it is sometimes more tricky.

  • This is a really interesting area to pursue student thinking. Many students only see mixtures as solids mixing and so salt solution and air and crude oil are not mixtures in their head.   • We will try to. Initially we set up the MOOC on AfL for Science and then shipped a bit of maths in. Dylan, of course, is our Maths person. We have a new MOOC coming out soon on Differentiated Learning and we have been better in that at getting Maths in from the start.

  • Florise - this is exactly what you should be thinking about. Sometimes you need rich discussion questions and sometimes HPQs.

  • Remember Linton that the HPQ is not your only source of evidence of learning with your class. You have all the other interactions you have had or have listened into with your learners.
