  • I wonder how we might look back on today's transport response in the next few months and years... Covid-19 arguably requires the biggest shake up to how we get around, particularly in major cities dependent on public transit systems.

  • Great interactive resource!

  • I walk/cycle locally and public transport is my first choice for commuting to work and any other solo trips. When family are involved we mostly end up taking the car...

  • From a public transport perspective, I am fortunate to live in outer London as I am well connected to much of the city via bus and tube. I'd say congestion, air pollution and car dependency are some of the biggest challenges we face, as well as trying to get people to change their travel behaviour, e.g. more active modes. Saying that, lockdown has disrupted...

  • @KatieTse The school commute is definitely a journey that people should aim to do actively (walk, cycle, scoot)! It would make a positive difference to air quality, road safety, congestion and physical activity levels in children.

  • @HaiderALI e-bikes can also be a good option for those wanting to travel longer, more hilly distances!

  • Hi Henry, I read recently that Bogota are introducing lots of temporary cycle lanes to help people get around during the current circumstances. I'd be interested to hear if you have seen anything on the ground yet?

  • As a Londoner without a driver's licence, public transport is a natural first choice for me. I've been cycling more in the last few years and walking is of course an integral part of how we navigate our surroundings. My use of private car is as a passenger, often when travelling with the whole family.

  • Hi all, I'm a graduate transport officer in London and am looking forward to going through the course, especially as we begin to consider the impact of the current pandemic on transport systems..!

  • Hi Emma, depends what your creative piece is? If it's written you could paste it in the discussion board on 2.9, if it's created online somewhere (Pinterest, YouTube, Wordpress, etc.) you can share the link with us, if it's handmade you could take a picture and tag us on Instagram - it's completely up to you, whatever is easiest!

  • Sounds great Jenn, I definitely recommend using the skills/interests you already have to share 'who made my clothes' stories, and photography is a good medium for it. Good luck with the lessons!

  • You're most welcome Lynne! This community of learners has been amazing to be a part of, thank you for participating :)

  • Prezi worked really well for this, loved the graphics and the overall story - well done!

  • Great format, I like how the interview style gives your skirt a voice!

  • Hi Ariane, this is awesome! A great method for sharing your narrative, thank you for your hard work :D

  • That's good news Emma, was their response helpful? So great to hear that you were inspired to pen your own poems, we'd love for you to post them here for us to read!

  • Hi Ana, some learners have used Pinterest and then shared a link, others have made a Wordpress blog or taken a picture on Instagram and tagged us in it @fash_rev_mooc - it's completely up to you :)

  • Hi Kirsi, that's an interesting saying, thank you for sharing! It's kind of goes hand in hand with 'ignorance is bliss'. I guess the up side is that while gaining knowledge on subjects like this can be uncomfortable, it's how we can go about making a difference. Thank you for your thoughtful reflections :)

  • Hi Katy, thanks for sharing the link

  • Hi Cat, welcome to the course! If you click the dot and then hover over the map (rather than trying to drag and drop) it should allow you to select where you are. Hope that helps - it if continues to be fiddly then don't worry, you can just move on to the next activity. Good luck!

  • An amazing array of pledges Ariane, thank you for sharing!

I think that's the key part with boycotting - letting brands know our reasons, otherwise they can attribute it to any other reason like disinterest in the clothing lines, managing finances, personal choice, etc. The more people that do it, the more attention it's likely to get. The motivation for it just has to be clear!

  • The experience vs. material possession argument reminds me of this quote: “Experience does for the soul what education does for the mind" - Casey Neistat. There's definitely something we can take from this and apply to the way we consume!

  • Hi Alice, I know last year someone made a pledge to answer "Where'd you get it?" with the place of manufacturing rather than the shop - it definitely changes the direction of conversation and opens up a new kind of dialogue. You could do something similar if you like!

  • Wow, great to see so many stories coming together!

  • Hi Melissa, great to see your detective work coming together - I like how you've considered the wider context in Hong Kong and what the workers lives might be like/what their wage might get them. Look forward to seeing it develop!

  • Love this Julie, you've documented your research findings so well and I like the tone you've written in! It's great to see the story come together with the images alongside (love the emails to Barbara!) - I look forward to reading more as you update it : )

  • Hi Charlotte, I've jut had a look on Pinterest - it's a great summary piece on Havaianas! I like the punchy facts and the flip flop graphics, great work!

  • Hi Kathryn, sounds like you're overcoming the challenges of detective work well and adapting to the information you are finding. It's rare to find a seamless story covering the whole supply chain so don't worry too much about gaps in your research. Piece together what you can - I'm currently trying to do the same regarding my PJs made in China - and if you...

  • Hi Charlotte, sometimes luck isn't on our side with this detective work no matter how determined we may be to find some answers. It's often the case we don't find what we were expecting and instead come across something we hadn't previously thought about so it's good that you've considered another angle with the sustainability of Havaiana's products.

    I've...

  • Hi Ana, I'm in the same position as you at the moment with my PJs! I got stuck with the 'who' so started looking at 'how' they were made instead, piecing a story together that way. I think there's definitely much to be learnt from this method too since I've come to appreciate the patience and skill required to add piping to the night shirt, sew in pockets,...

  • Love this Lisa, so thoughtfully woven together - thank you for sharing!

  • For anyone just joining the course, don't worry at all - the benefits of it being online is that you can do it whenever you get the chance! Be sure to make use of the valuable discussions happening in the comment sections to guide you and we've also pinned our Week 1 highlights to our Instagram page if you'd like to see what we got up to last week :) good luck!

  • Thank you for sharing this resource Kathryn, maps are a powerful tool for presenting information. It's crazy how we can view disaster at a distance in this way...

  • Don't worry about the map too much, sometimes it can be a bit fiddly - hope you enjoy the rest of the course!

  • Thank you all for sharing these links, it's great to see everyone taking advantage of the discussion board and learning from each other!

  • Hi Nancy, it's great to see so many people excited to get involved and the community feeling it has created. Hope you enjoy the course!

  • Hi Ana, great to have you on board! I like the idea of becoming 'paradigm shifters' for the industry, hopefully we can work towards that with this course. Don't worry about joining a little later, the benefits of it being online is that you can do it whenever you get the chance!

  • Hi Paula, it might not be sentimental but I think it's interesting that you bought the hoodie twice! There's something about finding a brand or style we like and sticking with it. Your detective work might reaffirm your choice or make you question it - I was in a similar situation when researching some headphones I had also purchased twice. Good luck and keep...

  • Hi Ida, thank you for sharing the article, that trailer was powerful - I couldn't help but cringe at the end with the banging continuing to echo in the factory... looked like a serious health and safety issue for the men doing the work. And you're right, we need empathy and understanding for others across the board, there are so many things happening around...

  • Thanks for sharing the link Mayu!

  • Some great points Kate!

  • Hi Arroyo, thank you for sharing this story about factories in Argentina. Learning about other countries/contexts can make us think about places closer to home and what might be happening right under our noses. It's a sad situation... I guess the first step is getting these stories out there in hope that something will be done to change the circumstances.

  • Thank you for sharing this interesting and important read Chelsea!

  • Hi Giorgia, English subtitles and a full transcript will be uploaded soon!

  • Hi Melanie, here are a few useful links - hope they're what you're looking for!

  • "we get a 3D view of the person not just a 2D faceless nameless 'Garment Worker" - Love this Alice!

  • Hi Anna, love the 'PhilosopHER' title you've gone with and the reflections on your mum's jumper. It's often the hand me downs that can be more special to us - like they have an addition story to tell!

  • Hi Alice, great to see an Exeter alumni taking part in the course! If you click the link to the interactive map and then select one of the pins (I have worked/haven't worked in fashion) it should then let you select a location on the map. Hope that helps!

  • That's alright John, we're all learning here!

  • Great to hear your highlights of the discussion panel Julia, I also loved learning that 1 email = 500 people wondering the same, it's definitely motivation to reach out to brands more!

  • Yes! It's great to see everyone interacting and sharing this experience together - it's what makes the course what it is!

  • A very good point Kaori, longevity is important! I agree, I don't think throwing things away is the answer, that can cause different problems in terms of waste.

  • Hi Ida, thank you for sharing the stories behind your clothes - I particularly like the one about your corduroy jacket!

  • Hi Charlotte, don't worry - contributing to the map doesn't require social media! The Twitter/Facebook functions are just there if anyone wants to share their finds on the map with their own social networks. If you click the 'Participate' link then you can either attach your own photo or one from the internet along with a description. Hope that helps!

  • An incredibly powerful and saddening image I'd not seen before, thank you for highlighting it Marisa. I agree - it's definitely important to consider the lives and human stories behind the numbers which mainstream media can get sidetracked by...

  • It's great to see the variety in sources, thank you for sharing!

  • Hi Matilda, there's some more info on the Accord and the Alliance in this Guardian article from earlier this year: https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/apr/24/bangladeshi-police-target-garment-workers-union-rana-plaza-five-years-on

There's also this one from a Spanish newspaper which fellow learner, Leire shared:...

  • Great reflections Jenn!

  • Thank you for sharing the article, it is important to consider the lives of garment workers in all parts of the world and how they may differ/be similar to each other.

  • Thanks for sharing the book recommendation and your thoughts Azarra!

  • Hi Gustavo, it initially didn’t work for me either! Make sure to accept the website’s privacy/cookies policy - I had a box pop up - and it should work for you then.

  • Hi Ellen, the ‘participate’ button on the map takes you through to a page where you can add photos and descriptions of the items you’ve chosen - Hope that helps!

  • This is unfortunately a common barrier for us detectives! Keep at it and if you end up with no reply then educated guesses are the next best step.

  • Another valid element to consider is the pricing of our clothing - how much did we buy the item for, was this discounted, etc! Of course, more recent purchases can be easier to remember. Feel free to add these details if you have them to hand.

  • Price is an important factor, thank you for highlighting it!

  • That's what it's all about, thank you for getting involved!
