Ultimately aiming for learners to be curious, to be independent of needing a teacher. Learning to have the skills to explore without direction, so that they can continue to enjoy the subject area for years to come.

what type of manager would i like to be? someone who looks out for potential opportunities for all of my team to grow as individuals and bond as a team, someone who deals with issues as they happen, not to let them grow into bigger problems, and someone who can find ways to measure success in creative jobs.

I think we can sometimes underestimate the importance of social time with our colleagues or building relationships, but we can be creative in finding ways for this to continue remotely!

Why am I interested in remote working?
Increasing my own productivity, no commute, no travel costs, more leisure time, peace and quiet and to help reduce overhead costs that my organisation covers. What particular challenge could remote working solve for me?
I'm trying to get on the property ladder, but with my job in London, that is very unlikely to... -

Hi, I'm Rachel from the UK and I work for a music education organisation based in London. I am looking hints and tips to develop my skills working remotely, especially regarding communication. I'm a musician and teacher in my spare time. Looking forward to getting started!

I've enjoyed reading all of your comments this week. I'd be very interested in reading comments from teachers who specify the number of hours practice required in their contracts and how do they manage it? Would anyone like to share their experience of this?
-
Rachel Cook replied to Sally Aldridge
Hi Sally, yes that's right, you can edit your own posts but not other people's. You can flag them if you need to report them for mis-use.
We are now a community of over 8500 people enrolled! -

Thanks for all of the fantastic, honest responses here, keep them coming! If you see a message where you feel you could give some advice, please do. And if you are also struggling with the same problem as someone else, let them know. Teaching can be isolating, so let's create a good, supportive network here. :)

Rachel Cook replied to Jennifer Davies
Hi @JenniferDavies I think if you have the room and the resources, why not! Would be great to have a 2nd instrument in the room for advanced repertoire.
-
Rachel Cook replied to Claire A
@ClaireA i'm sure many teachers here are in the same situation. In fact I've taught students who are clearly there because their parents want them to learn the piano/violin. Sometimes you can win them over, and sometimes you can't. I think we just have to be ok with that. I'd be interested in reading others' views on this.
-
Hi @MelanieG don't worry, no sharing required!
-
Hi @RamenClothilde you don't need to post the film, it's only for you to reflect on. Complete your lessons in any language you wish!
-
Hi @WanRongPeng The film will only be seen by you, you won't be sharing the film with others, so teach in whatever language you wish!
-
Hi @AnneMackie When I did this exercise myself, I chose a student that's quite average, not the best, not the worst. Hope that helps!

Rachel Cook replied to Lesley Mathison
Hi @LesleyMathison, if you upgrade, you can get a statement of completion. More info available here: https://about.futurelearn.com/about/faq?category=certificates-and-statements

We understand that sometimes it's not going to be possible to video your lessons. There are lots of types of evaluation you can do, which will still be valuable, for example video, audio, peer review, or a written account. Don't worry, it isn't essential to video your students to continue with this course!
As this is a free course, we aren't able to receive... -
@MhairiMiddleton good spot! I’ll get this sorted tomorrow!
Thank you! -
Hi Lucinda. Not at the moment, but you may wish to make separate notes so that you don’t have to print it. You can access the pdfs at any time during the course so you can always go back and refer to them later.
-
@AdeleWills thanks for sharing! Happy to see the word ‘pace’ in here. We can often be under external pressures to move at a pace we aren’t comfortable with. How do you communicate your philosophy to parents and pupils?
-
Hi @AlisonMcAusland thats great to read. The invention of adapted instruments has made music education possible for so many that perhaps wouldn’t have been able to access it. With your 4 points, how do you ensure that every lesson includes these? Do you check in regularly and recalibrate if one begins to overpower the rest?
-
@SallyAnneWastney that’s great. Can I ask, how do you ensure that every lesson is ultimately guided by your philosophy?
