  • Padlet is good but using for the very first time. A pre-planning always the centre piece of any project. A DMP is essential just before commencement, to be reviewed during research and archiving/reusability an essential aspect to allow future access.

  • Following a roadmap & a help desk to support users as needed.

  • It will be nice to know available Research data management frameworks e.g. RISE or ANDS and which to adopt and under what conditions. Usually frameworks like this are encompassing and toolkits provided will inform how data quality will be handled, the level of resources e.g. IT to deploy and scale as needed etc.

  • An electronic engineer and an information scientist with willingness to pivot into data science. Looking forward to learning best practices in data management

  • Will further review areas of further interest and revert later. Thanks

  • The big data analytics cycle gives a framework of the six steps to take. The course covered data gathering & tools used, mentioned issues of incomplete data and why pre-processing is required. The technicalities of data modelling, visualization and the art of interpretation are areas I will like to have mastery of and the data selection required for...

  • Opinion about the usefulness of big data analytics has not changed. Its usefulness and areas of application far outweighs the challenges of big data analytics. It is useful and readily available to solve immediate problems of the environment, businesses, governments and the health care. Its usefulness in giving additional insight on the Covid-19 pandemic is...

  • The opportunities are diverse and I believe we are yet to fully tap into the available opportunities that data analytics presents. The challenges of incomplete, heterogenous data also exist. Access to data may also be adversely affected due to data regulation policies being enforced by EU and other countries of the world.

  • Demographic related data collection through the web has drastically changed with consent sought from customers before data is collected with explanation on what data will be used for clearly stated before embarking on collection & storage for analysis and usage.

  • Surprised EU members leaving abroad are not covered, use to believe EU members working in multi national organizations abroad in EU companies are covered and same law applies to EU members in the EU companies despite the fact the organization is based outside the EU territory abroad.

  • In engineering where predictive maintenance is now taking place saves businesses downtimes thereby increasing productivity & revenue of companies. How does this work? Rather than undertake a regular traditional maintenance at specified period, maintenance is scheduled when really required based on data collected from sensors attached to e.g. compressors or...

Looking forward to pragmatic application of data analytics in business, government and everyday activity of interest that needs improvement like in Health care and environmental protection.

    LnkedIn: Demographic Data; Psychographic Data
Facebook: Behavioural, Locational & Referral data

  • Holding back additional information from the data-set could prevent re-identification. Releasing 10% or 100% of the population data will not prevent re-identification if those additional information are not withheld to prevent this.

  • Machines and Algorithms will not replace Doctors, Nurses and other health professional, it will only enable their decision making with higher level of accuracy and they can focus on other things that matters thereby improving quality of health delivery.

  • I will opt out as there is no clear cut security of data. With data protection regulations and the penalties involved, I am unwilling to take a risk until the extent of data security is assured.

  • Yes. Public sentiments went progressively negative until the culprits were sanctioned.

  • The game requires a team effort with skills at taking best shots , breaking through the defenses of opponent (offensive) & preventing opponent from breaking through own defense (defensive). The players with the best abilities in key areas of the game were selected. - A,C & D.

  • Sport based analytics is good and does not necessarily remove mythology in sports rather it clearly identifies what is being done better by our sports men & women which can be emulated. However, some actions may not be easily emulated as it is based on intuition, experience etc.

  • interested in air pollution of the environment in both urban and rural areas and its impact on the health of the citizenry, economy and provision of health care.

  • Two major challenges that will be faced by the EcoAdapt project are:
    1. Heterogeneity of data: Data from different sources, using different parameters that does not readily allow data linking for proper analysis (comparing likes for likes for analysis).
    2. Inconsistent and incomplete data: Data may not be available for some of the locations due to inability...

  • House hold waste collection has always taken place in our cities over a long period and wastes collection points can be monitored through sensors to determine when a truck should go for pick-up. Also wastes can be separated at point of disposal into plastics, paper/degradable wastes etc. The big data generated can be analysed to see pattern of these wastes...

Looking forward to the application of big data across different industries. Is there a framework to guide the application of data analytics cycle across different industries?

  • Looking forward to case studies and how data analytics can be applied to solve real life problems across different areas and segments of the economy.

  • Kunle Tella made a comment

I like the connection between the topics as it builds on the meaning of big data, how data is generated, challenges in analysing big data and the data analytics cycle.
I wonder what it takes to select the appropriate data as this may vary across disciplines e.g. data required for health and business will vary but what constitutes the appropriate data to...

Use LinkedIn often and share both demographic & psychographic data. It is a professional social media and able to follow organizations & particular areas of interest in such organizations. Also able to follow careers of interest on the platform.

  • Major social media platforms mentioned are the ones am already using. Very particular about my privacy and my posts are basically on professional basis.

The dataset should have been carefully selected for dissemination to meet the intent. Location data could have been omitted if it is that sensitive thus giving an incomplete data to avoid interpretation of such sensitive information.

  • The infographics is more informative with possibility of comprehensive stories around International students population, enrollment pattern, countries with highest student population etc. The tabular format is limited in information in comparison with the infographics with more raw data required for additional insight

  • Data selection takes a longer time as data from diverse sources may have to be checked for relevance to the problem to be solved. Other steps except interpretation that needs human involvement can easily be handled by employing tools already available for the recognised steps. In the current age of digitalization, various tools are available that will...

  • On a daily basis, large amount of data is being generated on different corporate systems which are not readily available to people outside such organizations as a number of this data ranges from intellectual property to data needed for day to day operations. A number of organizations have huge data which can be further analysed to get new insights. Also, the...

  • Big Data as the name implies are big and cannot be processed by typical software & hardware systems but requires special hardware & software resources for gathering, storing, analysing and processing. The y come in both structured and unstructured formats and diverse sources.

  • Our everyday life - personal/business/government- is all about data gathering, capturing & processing with the view to making a favorable decision or putting the outcome of the processing to good use. However, outcome of such processing may be negatively used as well. Predominantly, big data usage has been positive, however, in some instances also negative....

  • I am Kunle Tella from Nigeria, an electronic engineer and information scientist. Looking forward to new skills to compliment my information science background particularly in areas of analytics, AI & ML

  • Totally agree with you on these factors, however, greatest contributor today will be the social media which the millenials have fully embraced as well as effect of Corvid-19 with more work being done in the virtual space and contents being generated on different platforms.

  • Field collection of data through mobile phones integrated with application in the back office and equipment with sensors sending data back to the control room for monitoring & control has increased the capacity to gather data from various sources which can be adapted for various uses amongst which is equipment predictive maintenance purposes.

Glossary quite helpful, also shows the interdisciplinary diversity of data science. This goes onto show how diverse data science is with a possibility of a deeper insight as more information becomes available from other domain sciences.

  • With Corvid-19 lockdown, I have had t meet virtually with colleagues at work and through recorded presentations which I had to respond to via emails. Zoom, GoTO meeting and another meeting platforms has been a means of meeting stakeholders. Contributed to LinkedIn, twitter messages which are sources of generating fresh data.

  • Hi, name is Kunle Tella, involved in Business Process improvement and also a Digitalization practitioner. Looking forward to develop a new skill in data analytics.

  • Big Data set is a collection of structured and unstructured data from different sources with different formats. From the characterization by IBM, the volume of big data is usually huge (tera/exa bytes etc.) and the velocity at which the data is being generated is enormous depending on the sources of data and its intended usage. This is in addition to data...
