Really interesting to hear about your experience in the military. I think that's a great point about communicating clearly who you represent, and in what capacity you are conducting a conversation.

I agree, but it is also important to remember that countries will always try and influence each other. Of course, they will decide that on some issues, the reward is not worth the risk, or that other issues are more important. Inevitably, projecting influence may sometimes lead to (or even require) difficult conversations, which might damage relationships......

I really love this case study. I'm often asked whether I feel uncomfortable working at the FCO as a gay man. Of course, sometimes I do: the FCO undoubtedly have a difficult past in terms of respecting the rights of LGBT, but work like this makes me proud to work here. I don't think enough people understand the breadth of issues we work on, we could be better...

Interesting to hear your perspective from a predominantly Catholic society. On the second point, important to remember that not all women have husbands! They might have wives, partners, or be single and successful!
