There are in fact many different patterns and shapes that could be used, sometimes even the infinite ones! Can you think of an alternative shape of the city space that would be more realistic? What elements could be added to this abstract landscape?
I really love prof. Rosling's work - the data often contradicts popular beliefs and stereotypes. As for Gapminder tools, there is also a very interesting project called Dollar Street https://www.gapminder.org/dollar-street, where you can observe and compare houses and lifestyles from all over the world depending on household income.
