  • This is such an important area of work, thank you for joining the course, @AdrianWickham Adrian

  • Do invite your colleagues at the Association of Change Management Professionals to join us!

  • Its amazing to have someone with your expertise on the course, @MonicaHelton !

  • Indeed! I am sure you will make lots of great connections here. I would love to hear more about how you use the learning about change agency and building allies to increase screening uptake in deprived populations.

  • Thank you so much for joining the course, @AshleyJefferies

  • Hi Melissa, Welcome to the course! I hope you find lots of ways to apply the learning - let us know as you go through the modules.

  • I recognise the quoracy challenge and see the execution of power emerging here too. Yet waiting to get everyone together (and probably still missing folk who later exert their influence to derail progress) seems to go against the principles of building agency and energy for change. How can we re-dress the balance here? What are the most effective ways to win...

  • As soon as I saw the word "measure" I wanted to understand more about your point here, @FUNMILOLAOLAIFA - Have you some views on how to measure the impact of an incremental, networked approach to change?

  • @AnneOyewole Hi Anne and welcome to the School! The new system seems to provide a fertile space for transformation and change. I would love to hear more about how you are finding it.

  • Hi @SarahWhibley, great to learn a few things about you. It sounds like you are working in a great environment for spreading the large scale change methods being taught on this course. Have you listened to the podcast yet?...

  • Hi @LaurenBateman it is wonderful to have you on the course, thank you for telling us a bit about yourself. I hope you enjoy the content and all the connections!

  • Wow @NatashaWainaina it sounds like you are embarking on some exciting work! Do listen to the podcast this week, it provides a very entertaining summary of the key concepts taught here in relation to social movements, large scale change and complexity - and how they can enhance our change work...

  • Hi @nicolashephard its great to hear the passion behind your work. I hope you learn lots and that the course content helps to drive the personalised care agenda forwards in the South West! Be sure to make use of the wonderful networks of people in this community!

  • Wow that's an amazing role @VeronicaKuperman - have you listened to this week's School podcast? Its fantastic at explaining how large scale change principles, social movements and complexity approaches can be applied to Health Inequalities...

  • Amazing, @LeanneBerks! It sounds like you have a real purpose for participating in this course!

  • HI @ShelleyCornick great to have you on the course! What made you sign up and what are you hoping to get out of it?

  • Welcome. @MelanieStatton - great to see you are making connections on the course already! It sounds like you have a lot of experience to draw upon and look forward to seeing your contributions!

  • Hi @AnaP your passion for your work comes through already! I hope you make some great connections in this community and learn lots!

  • Welcome to the School @Emma-JaneG, I hope you enjoy the course!

  • Hi Simon, welcome to the School for Change! Your job role sounds fascinating, it will be interesting to see how it develops as the ICB structures emerge. I hope that we enhance your change knowledge on the course and it is of practical relevance - let us know!!

  • Thanks @AlvaroAstasioPicado have you got any key learning to share in terms of the skills and approaches that have enables you to successfully navigate complex challenges in the past?

  • Thanks @NicolaMitchell I'd be interested to learn how you apply it as you progress through the course.

  • Thanks @chloelight , is there a project you are working on that you could apply this categorisation process to?

  • Have you used this categorisation process to identify the best approach to change in your work @RobertDickson ?

  • That's a great point @Ann-marieA - and of course what is of value to one part of the system may be different to what is of value to another part of the system. The first episode of the School podcast explores this.

  • @AnthonyJohnLongbone is breaking down challenges an approach that is documents? Interested to learn more - thanks for sharing!

  • That's a great point @SharonTucker I can think of many processes that enable good communication in teams (such as Huddles) but fewer at a systems level. Have you found any good examples?

  • @sarahchessell I agree! I think what you are describing is "emergence". Being agile and responsive really requires us to have a good sense of shared purpose, however, - or we could easily get distracted!

  • Thanks for sharing your reflections @RachelReilly

  • Hi @ValerieEnfys, overwhelm in relation to the challenges of complexity it is certainly a theme amongst these comments today, What's been useful to you so far from the course in helping to overcome this?

  • @CarolineSanders I hear you! Yes, we do have a lot of interweaving parts of the system to consider. I listened to a very short 7-min summary video this morning, describing how to develop an effective system strategy which may be of interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrdyf5lDovo&list=PL_Qw_PknJHRodZFs2jSPa-U79eNUuViO-&index=6

  • That's a great point @JenC - taking the time to identify our key stakeholders is time well spent. How has the complex/complicated distinction influenced that in your work so far?

  • Hi @IzzyNielsen, welcome to the course! I'm interested to know about what the transition to value based healthcare involves? You've come to the right place to develop your change skills for the purpose of helping increase health equity. Enjoy! Please do share what you are learning and how you are applying it.

  • Hi @AmandaBouma its great to meet another data and measurement person! What are you hoping to get from the School for Change Agents? Do you encounter any challenges influencing change through data and feedback to clinics that you think the course might help with?

  • Hi @larisaluca, its wonderful to have you on the course. Your approach to engagement and developing networks is key to integrated care and the challenges that both our countries face in regards to system change. I look forward to hearing what you learn and how you think your group could also benefit!

  • Welcome @RachelD! It is interesting that the human brain can be so fearful of change. Like you, I like to find ways to create environments that facilitate positive experiences of change. Would love to hear more about what you take from the course and how you apply it to your service development improvement projects!

  • Hi @AnitaPierce your passion for building connections and developing solutions through relationships is so important for driving system change, we are lucky to have you in the NHS! Thanks for the great quote. Look forward to learning more about how you are building shared purpose as you develop the community mental health offer and how the School for Change...

  • Welcome @NikkiWilliams Great to heave you on the course - your role is such an important part of the future of healthcare, its great that you are extending your skills in change by being here with us. I would love to learn more about how you apply the content to your work on personalised support planning and empowering people to feel in control of their own...

  • Hi @AmandaBouma Amanda! Great to have you with us on the course! Look forward to reading about your reflections on the course content and how it applies to your work in the Canadian Healthcare context.

  • These are all important points, Sally! Thanks for sharing. Co-design techniques are also about re-framing the purpose together and building our awareness of the other parts of the system our changes will be impacting on and involving them from the start.

  • This is a great approach, Katie! Keep up the good work!

  • I agree @LouiseAndrews - and in not taking action, we are influencing the system

  • Providing personalised care is certainly a challenge in a medical world that has become highly specialised, due to massive advances in technology, leaving "generalist" skills wanting. I, as a patient, welcome and and am grateful for the specialist knowledge, but it is down to me to put it all together in the end and make the decisions about my care for myself....

  • Such important points made here. It is very easy to mask feeling psychologically unsafe. People may respond in different ways depending on whether they are prone to fight or flight - many will be defensive, some will try to make themselves invisible.

  • @LindsayPerera I totally agree! Tim Clarke's book on the 4 stages of psychological safety also cites evidence that Emotional Intelligence is an essential leadership skill for building psychological safety in teams. Highly recommend!

  • Hi Insa, Have you tried putting the captions/subtitles on?

  • Thank you for your reflections Abby!

  • I really love the way you describe change agency here @RebeccaR - and the link you make to the work you do to drive engagement

  • I agree, Emma. It is so energising to hear the shared purpose towards a Greener NHS.

  • @NightAtwongyeire So sorry to hear this is your experience - have you had a chance to use Helen's advice and tell your team leader you are doing the school with a view to helping improve the teams shared purpose?

  • @CathyTubby Invisible power might not be recognised by players in the system but it does impact on change. Building on your examples, the three faces of power are about your position in relation to the decision-making space. If you have visible power, you are making decisions about how the college campus is run or how the seating positions in the car are...

  • @GemmaRoughsedge have you had a chance to answer our questionnaire? We'd love to hear your views and it only takes a couple of minutes. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • I agree she was very focussed on these two things - both kept her motivated and perhaps the environment welcomed her too

  • @Bridget-AnnKenny have you had a chance to answer our questionnaire? We'd love to hear your views and it only takes a couple of minutes. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • @ChristineBrown have you had a chance to answer our questionnaire? We'd love to hear your views and it only takes a couple of minutes. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • Wow Christine thank you for sharing your approach and the impact it had.

  • Congratulations - and thanks for sharing your success story. It takes courage to be authentic sometimes but is more likely to have a positive impact than not!

  • This is a really interesting point - can you say more about the pre-living that accompanies those stressful situations?

  • That's fantastic - and a real leadership skill to do so.

  • This is an experience I am sure many others can relate to. Conversations that happen through hierarchical links are often seen as "formal" whereas "informal" conversations that link people across boundaries can often be perceived as threatening. How do we support ourselves and others to realise the benefits of informal, cross-boundary conversations?

  • I like those rules @JuliaSmith ! Thanks too for sharing your experience of working with the Theory X approach to leadership and management.

  • Thanks for joining the course for a second year @SarahGarland! Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • As long as you are not losing a part of your identity by over-editing yourself, I agree with Nina, your approach is to be congratulated and your authenticity will be recognised.

  • Congratulations on your recovery process and I hope you find this course helpful in achieving your goals.

  • Its heartening to hear that you have found your tribe and that those people are helping you through a difficult environment - keep up the good work building the energy with these people and hopefully you will see the change you want in the world! Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet?...

  • @DonahH thanks for sharing your experiences of this difficult time, its great that you were able to find a way through and do this important work. Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • Yes! The power of purpose! Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • In today's complex environments where uncertainty reigns, I wonder if this practice of identifying your shared purpose as a team, is a task that requires more attention and effort. Do you have a view on that?

  • @CaeraMahoney that also resonates with me - many improvement projects that I have helped with have continued on - I would say those are the successful ones! There are always new people and there is always opportunity for development and growth through purposeful work as we are lucky to be doing.

  • @LindsayPerera We do need to recognise the importance of reflection time - have you used journalling at all? We also need to recognise the demands and forgive ourselves, as "you can only do what you can do".

  • Its so important to understand each other's motivations and goals when working together - thanks for reminding us of that @ThomasS

  • Wow what an important job that is! I hope this course helps you to achieve your goals! Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • Yes, it could be a lonely journey and finding allies is important to sustain our own energy for change. Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • @GordonOliver thanks for sharing this - do you have any effective approaches for taking a step back and looking at things from a different perspective? Also, have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • Thanks for sharing this - perhaps the saying "all models are wrong but some are useful" should be extended with something that emphasises the importance of human factors

  • Thanks for sharing your reflections @LauraTitus Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • @CharlotteBocking what a fantastic opportunity for cross-fertilisation of learning and experience! Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • very good advice!

  • @EsmeHarvard Thanks for this reflection, we do become stuck in our ways and the pirate mentality can help us to break free! Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • @JacklynS I find it useful to have a note of my stakeholders as a reminder of those diverse voices I may forget - we all have blindspots !

  • We do need reminding every now and then, too! Thanks for your reflections. Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvl5_0yhsWs9325Nb8q3ureVogP6eLmpYvhyklwemyLSJI-A/viewform?usp=sf_link

  • This is such an interesting reflection @SaraBegg and I'm sure resonates with others conducting evaluations! As a researcher by background, I know the value of these questionnaires is often unseen, so I am happy to complete them without the feedback, but perhaps there are valuable learning feedback loops we don't fully realise can come from sharing results in a...

  • @KimberlyMerk-Brown Maintaining the energy for change for the long haul can be hard though! Demonstrating progress (however small) is one ingredient involved in maintaining energy - the next module uncovers some more....

  • How do you build trust in your workplace @Christy-leighSpeagle ?

  • @LindsayPerera How will you make this internal change? I'm looking for tips!

  • Human connections are so important in any process of change and adaptation.

  • Thanks for such an open and honest reflection here. What might you do to celebrate the small wins in the future @JacklynS ?

  • @JacklynS I love the idea of building our own tables! That is probably what is referred to as "allyship" and, as you say, will be most successful with the levers executed by old power structures. Have you had a chance to answer our welcome questionnaire yet? Please do if you have time - its a quick one!...
