Coventry University program

Construction Cost Management

Develop an understanding of the factors that influence the time, quality and costs involved in construction management.

This program is part of the MSc Construction Project and Cost Management degree offered by Coventry University

Evaluate procurement strategies applicable to construction projects

This program gives you the opportunity to develop a critical awareness of the concepts, theories and principles relevant to preparing budget costs and understanding the cost control techniques used for monitoring project progress and expenditure.

You’ll explore the procurement and tendering principles, techniques and factors that impact the construction estimating process. You’ll also have the opportunity to get to know the cost management tools at work in the industry and how they’re deployed throughout the various stages of a project.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program you should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate and appraise procurement strategies applicable to construction projects and the tendering methods as currently used in the construction industry

  • Use concepts and principles in the preparation of budget costings and evaluate analytical estimating methods for building and civil engineering projects

  • Evaluate the relevance of procurement strategies and cost information required to procure construction projects – including pricing of tender and the impact of health, safety and risk on project costs

  • Evaluate and apply a range of estimating methods for cost advice – including approximate estimating, operational estimating, unit rate estimating and preliminaries using various examples (excavation and earthwork; concrete work; brickwork and blockwork) and bidding strategies

  • Critically evaluate the analytical estimating methodologies and their applications to given case studies with particular emphasis on industry and professional standards such as NRM1 (new rules of measurement set out by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors)

  • Appreciate, apply and evaluate various construction cost management tools and techniques throughout the contract administration stages of the construction project internationally
