Learn and develop effective strategies for preparing, responding and recovering from emergencies and disasters

In this program you will study a wide range of topics, from the importance of good emergency planning and preparedness, defining effective emergency preparedness, key challenges in developing robust emergency plans, ensuring effective implementation of an emergency plan and ensuring that emergency plans continue to be fit-for-purpose.

This program will help you to create a more effective emergency planning strategy from past lessons learnt. You will research case studies from around the world, comparing UK and US preparedness frameworks. The program will also help you build a better understanding of the current issues around emergency planning.

An Emergency Planner, specialising in crowd safety. Course Director for the MSc degrees in Emergency Management & Resilience, Disaster Management & Resilience, and Crowded Places & Public Safety.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, you should be able to:

  1. To analyse and evaluate the various principles, styles, national statutes, regulations and guidance that should underpin the preparation of arrangements for managing emergencies.
  2. To analyse risk assessment concepts, approaches and control methods, and to understand the application of those measures for the purpose of emergency planning and preparedness.
  3. To analyse and evaluate emergency preparedness approaches, including planning for preparation, response and recovery in a variety of contexts.
  4. Use assimilated knowledge to develop a framework for the development and evaluation of preparedness activities.
