Global Development in Practice: Designing an intervention
Learn what's required for effective development intervention
This program is the third of a set of four that make up the Open University module Global development in practice (D890).
This module critically engages with tools, frameworks and methods associated with designing development interventions using case studies for real life. You will be taken through the process of planning, implementing and evaluating a development intervention, with the different stages covered roughly in chronological sequence according to the concept of the project (or programme) cycle, which is widely used among development agencies.
Whilst the main focus is on development management practice, you will also look at the more theoretical issues and debates covered in the first two programs, ‘Discovering development management’ and ‘Understanding development context'. It forms the bridge between theoretical debates around ‘good’ development management discussed earlier and the policy-focused ‘rules of games’ that will come up in the final part of the course, ‘Bringing about change'.

My academic interests are centred around gender and development, the Sustainable Development Goals and global governance processes all of which I've taught or practised. I'm module Chair of D890.

Susan is an Open University tutor and a seasoned development researcher. She works extensively with international development organisations to deliver training and author teaching materials.
Rachel is a social anthropologist by training and inclination, who has worked for the OU for 17 years. She's carried out research in India, Indonesia and Mozambique.
I work as an Associate Lecturer with The Open University tutoring on undergraduate courses on Public Health and International Development. I am a facilitator on the Lottery of Birth Course.
