By the end of this program, you should be able to apply political theories to emergencies and disasters to gain a better understanding of those events.

Who will you learn with?

A former London Fire Brigade SEVESO emergency planner, teaching emergency preparedness, the UK Civil Contingencies Act, and public policy and political economy approaches to emergency intervention.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this program, you should be able to:

  • To analyse and evaluate trends and issues in emergencies and disasters, and to evaluate their implications forintervention in these events.

  • To analyse and appraise a policy-based approach to emergency management.

  • To analyse the concepts and practice of 'Integrated Emergency Management’ and ‘interoperability’ with particular reference to challenges for multi-organisational policy and frameworks in comparative ‘governance’.

  • To analyse and evaluate political theories of the state as alternative lenses for differing analyses of emergencies,disasters and intervention into them.

  • To analyse how different policy approaches and instruments may align with alternative political theory approaches, with a resultant propensity for differing emergency and disaster policies and practical outcomes.
