Welcome to the program

This unit develops an understanding of the epidemiology, classification and pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and the associated complications from a local and global perspective.

The unit explores contemporary research into the pathophysiology, risk factors and prevention of the major types of DM and the microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes. Students will develop an understanding of the importance of health assessment and maintenance in the context of DM and how to minimise the risk of development and progression of diabetes complications.

Who will you learn with?

Cath is a credentialed diabetes nurse educator with a special interest in diabetes and pregnancy. She works clinically in this field which enhances her academic role and passion for educating students

Dr Virginia Hagger is a RN-CDE, who has worked in the diabetes field as a clinician, program manager and researcher. She is the Course Leader for the Grad Cert in Diabetes Education.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe diabetes mellitus in local and global contexts: including definition, epidemiology, risk factors, diagnostic criteria and classification.
  • Explain the actions of the hormones involved in of blood glucose homeostasis, glucose, protein and fat metabolism.
  • Contrast normal carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, with the metabolic abnormalities occurring in type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Apply knowledge of diabetes pathophysiology to explain the clinical features and diagnosis of the different types of diabetes mellitus in specific clinical contexts.
  • Explain the risk factors, pathogenesis and principles for management of chronic diabetes-related complications.
  • Apply knowledge of evidence-based guidelines to develop a multidisciplinary management plan to prevent and manage risk factors for diabetes and diabetes-related complications.
