Build your knowledge of procurement, tender preparation and pre-contract documents

This program aims to critically appraise principles relevant to pre-contract management practices for construction projects, with particular emphasis on pre-tender documentation. The program also provides an opportunity to develop critical awareness of the options for pre-contract documentation, including the client and project factors that influence their choice.

You will also explore the varying management practices that are currently used during the pre-contract stages of a construction project, including value management, health and safety and supply chain management.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this program, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish between contemporary construction procurement methods, their associated contractual arrangements and tendering strategies
  • Carry out measurement in accordance with industry and professional Rules of Measurement (NRM2 / SMM7 / CESMM4) as an aid in preparation of pre contract documentation and Bills of quantities
  • Critically evaluate the analytical estimating methodologies and their applications to given case studies; and to review the concepts, theories and principles relevant to pre-contract management practices
  • Appraise a critical awareness of the current problems and new insights in the application and interpretation of pre-contract documentations appropriate to various procurement routes in the construction sector within the broad framework of the changing procurement requirements
  • Advise on appropriate methods of measurement and select appropriate pricing document.
