Explore and master the principal methods of conducting extensive research

This program provides the grounding for students wishing to undertake analysis of existing documents and secondary data, as well as the collection and analysis of primary data during their final working paper.

Throughout the program you will examine processes and principles around conducting research, and will explore extensive research designs. You’ll also be introduced to some of the principal methods of conducting extensive research via social surveys, documentary, archival and census evidence.

The program also explores more intensive forms of investigation, including interviewing, ethnography and various forms of qualitative analysis.

Who will you learn with?

I am senior lecturer in disaster management at Coventry University. I am interested in pedagogy for emergency and crisis response training/exercises and risk communication.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this program, you should be able to:

  • Define the role of research in advancing the discipline and reviewing the types of research undertaken by practitioners as everyday activities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main philosophical and theoretical approaches to research methods and associated relevant methods
  • Critically appraise the main approaches to research design, sampling, analysis and dissemination appropriate to their area of interest
  • Define the role of the literature review in a research project and appropriate approaches to an extended evaluation of documentary and existing organisational sources
  • Critically evaluate the key ethical, political, legal and social issues that need to be considered when carrying out research
