Learn how to formulate sustainable logistics strategies and green supply chains

This program introduces the basics of sustainable development and the social and policy issues affecting sustainable supply chain design.

You will examine the ethical procurement of suppliers and materials and develop an understanding of protocols for eliminating non-value-added manufacturing activities. You will also evaluate the performance of different freight transport configurations, considering alternative modes, fuels and technologies.

This program aims to develop your understanding of the issues affecting last-mile logistics and establish decision-making skills through the use of real-life examples.

On successful completion you should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate the concept of sustainability and comprehend how organisations can integrate sustainable principles into their supply chain operations to meet legislative demands and create value to business stakeholders

  • Determine the tenets of sustainable material sourcing, manufacturing and warehousing practices through a holistic consideration of procurement, production and storage systems and the adoption of environmental design and management standards

  • Build enhanced knowledge of developing sustainable freight transport systems through appropriate selection of transport modes, fuel types and vehicle technologies, and critically select and apply appropriate carbon auditing tools for lifecycle and scenario analyses

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the circular economy concept and critically appraise the most appropriate technological and engineering methods to recover energy and value from waste in an environmentally and socially responsible manner

  • Identify and justify best practices of sustainable city logistics strategies and apply the principles of sustainable development for decision making and the formulation of practical supply chain solutions for the industry and the society
