Design and develop effective emergency training and exercise programmes

When resources are tight, it’s crucial that we maximise our capability and capacity to prepare for emergencies and disasters.

This program will identify circumstances when training is of maximum benefit in developing the knowledge of individuals and emergency teams.

You will focus on designing training that develops adaptive expertise and work on exercises that test processes, systems and their underlying assumptions. You will understand the importance of monitoring and evaluating when making your business case for future training and exercise programmes.

Who will you learn with?

Assistant Professor in disaster management and emergency planning at Coventry University, The focus of my research is on the risk communication and pedagogy for emergency response exercises.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Appraise the importance of training and exercising in the discipline of disaster, crisis and emergency management for capacity building and validation of arrangements.

  • Evaluate and apply models and theories related to training and learning; simulation, gaming and exercising appropriately in the context of training and exercising for emergencies.

  • Critically analyse processes and challenges in developing and delivering training exercises.

  • Evaluate approaches to exercise debriefing, evaluation and review.
