FAQs

What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of things, or IoT, refers to a system of interrelated objects (or things) that are all connected to the internet and that can collect, process, and transmit data using a wireless network without any human intervention.

Who coined the term ‘the Internet of Things’?

The term ‘the Internet of Things’ was coined way back in the 1990s by an employee of Procter and Gamble called Kevin Ashton. He believed that Procter and Gamble should put a microchip in everything they made, thus making all their items interconnected and becoming a part of the Internet of Things.

How does the Internet of Things work?

Devices, or things, are connected to each other via an ‘internet of things’ platform. This then integrates all the data from the different things and applies the various analytics to share the most essential bits of information with specific applications made to address particular needs.

For instance, to use the alarm clock and coffee machine analogy - your alarm clock connects with your coffee machine, and when your alarm clock goes off, that data is sent to your coffee machine telling it to make your morning coffee.

Why is IoT important?

The Internet of Things can benefit nearly any sector it is used in. It can help make informed decisions that will then assist with the processes of the connected things and reduce cost, improve process efficiency, and reduce manpower. At the end of the day, more data means better decisions.

What are some examples of the Internet of Things?

You’ll likely have some examples of the Internet of Things in your own home. Some of the more common IoT examples include smart home security devices, autonomous farming equipment, connected appliances, and wearable health monitors.
