Development can mean different things to different people. For development managers around the world, it’s about the process of bringing about change and achieving social justice. But how can development be managed and what tools do development managers need?

In this course, you will discuss the answers to these questions and boost your understanding of development management as a whole. As you learn to unpack what development management is, you will recognise the complexities and political nature of development. You will also apply a development management tool to a real-world context.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

Is it possible to manage development?

    • Welcome to course

Find out about the course and begin to think about whether it is possible to manage development.

    • What is development?

There are many different views about what development actually is. Find out what these are and think about your own definition.

    • What is development management?

Now that you have a better understanding of what development is and the discourse around it, you’ll think about what managing that development might look like.

    • You and development management

Explore who you are and why this is important for managing development. In particular, consider bias, both conscious and unconscious, and how to mitigate it.

    • Review of Week 1

Take a moment to review what you’ve learned in this week of the course.

  • Week 2

    Doing development

    • Planning a development intervention

Look at how development management is done, focusing on projects, the most common form of intervention.

    • Stakeholder analysis

A stakeholder analysis is an important tool for ensuring the project gets off to a strong start. It enables the development manager to identify who the key people or organisations are for the proposed project.

    • Succeeding in development management

The benefits of development work are not always easy to measure. They can take time to manifest, and have unexpected benefits such as an income generation scheme that also raises self-esteem and confidence to contest injustice.

    • Review of Week 2

Take a moment to review what you’ve learned in this course.
