The Conversational Framework

Diana Laurillard uses this video to introduce the Conversational Framework and the six types of learning it embraces.

The video talks you through the Conversational Framework. a simple distillation of many theories of learning developed over the last hundred years or so, to support teachers in designing for learning.

To design for any type of learning, f2f or online, at any level, it is useful to think this through in the light of what we know about how students learn. The theories have not changed. What it takes to learn the complex concepts and skills in formal education is still the same in spite of great cultural and technological changes. Using the framework to guide the way you plan for your students to learn will help with both campus and online learning contexts.

The video explains the framework and the 6 main types of learning it embraces. It shows how each of these cycles of iterative activity help students develop their concepts and practices and the relationships between them.

The framework is now widely used, and does seem to be a useful way for teachers to think through what the learning design for a session must do to help students learn.

The article in Downloads sets out the definitions of the six learning types, for both conventional and digital methods of teaching.
