Common types of food fraud

In this video, Professor Chen will talk about food adulteration in seafood, honey, meat, and milk. Many of the food frauds caused are for economic purposes.

He starts to give a couple of examples of seafood species impersonation of high-priced species. The prices of wild-caught and farm-raised seafood are very different but their appearance could be very similar.

The next common food fraud is honey. Raw honey contains a whole host of benefits: from being a source of antioxidants to antibacterial and antifungal properties. But fake honey does not have these qualities. The common adulteration method is to add high fructose corn syrup. Other than that, merchants can make more profit from mislabeling botanical or geographical origins of honey.

Meat fraud is an old issue and still happens occasionally. Adding pork or chicken into beef is common adulteration. Milk fraud can cause serious health problems. In 2008, melamine was found in milk to increase nitrogen level of milk for passing quality control. Many people especially infants are suffered and sick in China.
