National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University

About

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was founded in 2021 through merging National Yang Ming University (established in 1975) and National Chiao Tung University (established in 1896), two top-tier universities in Taiwan. After the merge, NYCU has 19 colleges and 74 research centers with around 1,400 teachers and 20,000 students.

NYCU was founded on the idea that, in a great university, people work across the disciplines to solve real-world problems. With the strength of information and communications technology along with biology and medicine, NYCU could contribute more in the cross-disciplinary fields such as digital medicine and bioinformatics. In addition to implementing effective integration and innovation under the conventional organizational structure of regular teaching, research, administration, and student affairs, NYCU is singularly unique as it will establish Taiwan’s most innovative smart medical research.

The University has always believed that high quality education resources should not be the privilege of a few and should be made available to as many people as possible. Based on this belief, NYCU was the first university to launch Open Course Ware (OCW) website in the Chinese-speaking societies in 2007. Subsequently, NYCU established the first massive open online course (MOOC) platform hosted mainly Chinese-based courses in 2013: “ewant” open education platform (www.ewant.org). Since then, more than 90 top universities from Taiwan and Mainland China have joined the platform and offered over hundreds of courses each year, making “ewant” the most prominent MOOC platform in Taiwan.
