Activity

  • It does! - it includes Ghana, South Africa and ESWATINI

  • There is plenty of investment available. It's finding the right opportunities that are of a market size. Small projects (ie below $50m see too small to finance!)

  • It will require some big picture changes in what we do and how we live our lives.

  • It's a real problem. Hopefully as we start to incorporate Scope 1-3 emissions into purchasing decisions, more sustainable products will become more valuable.

  • Will be interesting to see the impact of initiatives like carbon border adjustment taxes

  • I agree! It's a challenge getting the balance of regulation without stifling innovation.

  • It's still an emerging area but gathering steam!

  • @JoséElíasGuardadoVirgen There is no penalty for any delays or non-compliance. Each commitment made is meant to be binding and achievable but no one has the ability to force a country to adopt stretching targets or to achieve what it has committed to. It's a tricky balance. If there were penalties then countries would be less keen to make any commitments. We...

  • Agreed but sometimes it easier to prioritise at least one or else it can feel to vague or difficult to make a difference.

  • Agreed but at least natural capital provides an approach to measure how we destroy or can add to the natural capital of the planet.

  • I agree with you. Education trumps all in my opinion!

  • Perhaps time to create a global alliance!!

  • Wow. You're making a difference!

  • Thanks for the share.

  • It's not a COP but the 1987 Montreal protocol to protect the ozone layer showed what the global community can do when it wants to!

  • That's great to read. We need more companies to explain what they are doing and hold them to account!

  • Spot on. Sadly I agree with your points.

  • That's fantastic news. Keep us updated with progress!

  • Great response!

  • I agree that it's difficult. It may also depend on where you live and your economic situation.

  • I hope you enjoy the course and it inspires you to make a change!

  • you make some great points. I fear that the costs of transition are not fully understood or recognised.

  • Greenwashing is a challenge

  • Thanks for sharing the cake!

  • Thanks for the tip!

  • Part of the challenge in creating standards is that it's hard to agree on them in my opinion.

  • How informative is the reporting in your view?

  • Do you think any will be achieved or is that not the point?

  • @GeorgiaBarnes In my view the SDGs help us to cut through the noise and the questions over standards, etc and to look from a high level of what we all know to be important - eg education for all, basic needs addressed, justice for all, etc.

  • That's great news. We all have to do what we can. Electric equipment may lead to less local air pollution which can only be a good thing for the young and the old.

  • It's the same in most countries. We have over-consumed and the costs of addressing it are substantial.

  • I agree. We all see the issues from different perspectives but in the end we need all of the addressed.

  • I agree. I hope that ESG becomes more mainstream and progress is seen as just making better long term business decisions.

  • A great response. Thank you for sharing

  • It's a sad fact of life. However good governance and diversity of thought and backgrounds are becoming more important for consumers and this will hopefully make the necessary changes.

  • Scopes 1,2 and 3 are recognised globally.

  • We shouldn't ignore early successes such as the Montreal Protocol but it does seem increasingly difficult to get everyone on the same page. Plus money has become more contentious in my view.

  • why is E most important to you?

  • @AlwynReid It's also the easiest to measure!

  • The UK's Taxonomy will be similar but not the same. I watch with interest as the taxonomy gets published!

  • @AlwynReid Thanks for sharing the links!

  • Regulators may impose fines for greenwashing of financial products. Shareholders may sue companies for false claims. Consumers may boycott companies.

  • @KatrinaLeese Good luck and provide feedback when you finish!

  • @KatrinaLeese I agree with all of your sentiments!

  • @AnnickBonelloCassar Great ideas. Are these happening where you live?

  • I agree about the importance of education. It's the key to social mobility

  • @MartinHoad In my view climate change and the impact on our planet will result in increasing social divisions. We need to pay more attention to the social needs of our families, our colleagues and our wider communities or we risk conflict

  • @MartinHoad I think it's there

  • @AnnickBonelloCassar Just because it's hard, doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I do agree it's hard to measure but one measure can be the level of training and tool available to staff.

  • @MartinHoad Yes, in my view!

  • ESG has some unusual outcomes!

  • I agree Martin. As you point out, in practice we still find too many examples of poor governance.

  • Great reply!

  • It's a good point but the costs of implementing climate change are so big and have significant side effects! Getting everyone on the same page in practice is almost impossible.

  • Sad but true. The pace of focus on biodiversity is accelerating as we understand the issues better but it still has a long way to go.

  • Interesting reply!

  • It's a good start. And when you start to focus on ESG, you find lots more!

  • There were a number of key developments. Some of these are discussed in the next Activity that focuses on biodiversity.

  • Reporting is important to hold organisations to account but it's a balance. Getting it wrong can lead to complaints about greenwashing and wider reputational risks.

  • Great advice Katrina!

  • what a great reply!

  • I agree that we will all find some SDGs more important than others. Climate change is one of the most visible SDGs that we all see, wherever we are. Good luck on the course!

  • The environment has been the source of the greatest focus given the impact of the rising temperatures

  • I prefer a table / tripod but agree with you.

  • I agree but what do you FEEL is most important

  • Doing courses like this and getting certification is important. Your existing employer may also help you understand how they are dealing with the challenges that ESG creates. There are also a number of organisations looking for junior staff.

  • That's great. Hope it's proving useful

  • Great response! Net zero should not be our only goal. Also net zero is not necessarily possible I feel.

  • I agree that it's better than nothing. It does provide an annual focus on key issues

  • Sounds great. Finding solutions in shipping will make a big impact on emissions

  • I agree. We need all 3. Someone told me it's like a table with 3 legs. Each is needed!

  • That's great to hear. What difference are you finding from this?

  • We've tried hard!

  • I agree and many are inter-related.

  • There are new targets agreed at the Kunming-Montreal protocols that go through to 2030. Hopefully we'll do better in delivering these goals than we did for Aichi.

  • Start by asking questions about what your company is doing already!

  • I agree. Sustainability touches so many UN functions. It's impossible to list them all!
