  • What camera do you have?

  • Not really, you will struggle with getting consistent result. And the settings on this course won’t be ideal. Mike

  • Hi, you need to press the flash button, a lightning sign on the camera to use the pop up flash, you will get shadowing though. Mike

  • Sorry, but you need a macro lens. Mike

  • Have you tried the link on www.dental photography practice.com , other alternative would be the eye fi card. Mike

  • You would use wide angle for shots such as landscapes. Mike

  • Try any, the idea is to get used to what your camera does. Mike

  • Hi Claudia, yes that’s should be fine. Mike

  • After 10 weeks you will lose access to the course and will need to upgrade. Mike

  • Not sure what help you need, settings are very similar for all ringflashes. Mike

  • Hi Dina, I know I have replied to this via email, but thought it was worth repeating for the benefit of others. “ Not sure if in dentistry you would ever use x2 magnification and the lens looks a bit bulkier than the Canon 100mm, it also will only go to f22 whereas Canon will go to f32, which you may need at x2 magnification. It is also a little heavier than...

  • That’s fine.Mike

  • Magnification factors are on the macro lens, if you don’t have a macro lens they are not marked. Mike

  • Ok. Mike

  • There is encryption software on the web.
In my opinion as long as you have no patient details with the images, it should be ok, you could have registration numbers as a title. Mike

  • Normally you would be about 1.5 meters, but fill frame with head. Mike

  • Because the diaphragm is vey small so sharpens the image. Mike

  • Because the Sigma lens doesn’t go to f32

  • You can try that but benefits are not necessarily better. Mike

  • Same for all flashes, set to manual flash and adjust power to get correct exposure at 1:3 magnification at f22. Mike

  • Do you have a DSLR or a Canon 4000D? Mike

  • If you are any auto settings it will workmautomatically, but not on manual. Mike

  • Yes that’s fine. Mike

  • Sounds like you have a Nikon fit flash which won’t work. Mike

  • Same for all flashes, set to manual flash and adjust power to get correct exposure at 1:3 magnification at f22. Mike

  • Same as a single ring flash but set both to the same setting. Mike

  • Neutral setting is under ‘picture style’ mike

  • Not really useful,as it isn’t supported. Mike

  • Not something I deal with, check direct with Futurelearn. Mike

  • Models change regularly, as long as it is a Nikon compatible flash, it will always state Nikon or Canon fit.

  • You need lens and ringflash specifically for Pentax. Mike

  • Hi Phoebe, unfortunately 4000D is not recommended for dental, photography as it is lacking any dioptre adjustment on the eyepiece which you need to be able to adjust to your eyes for accurate focussing, unless it happens to be correct for your eyes. Best way of checking is setting your lens to manual focus and try focusing on something very close and see if you...

  • Hi, look on www.dental photography practice.com for Canon 100mm macro. Mike

  • See dental photography practice.com for options. My recommendation for Canon would be Canon 100mm macro and any of the flashes listed. Mike

  • Hi, camera is fine but you need a prime macro lens, either Canon 100mm macro or Sigma 105mm macro. See www.dentalphotographyinpractice.com. Mike

  • That’s good. Mike

  • Sorry as we don’t have technical support from the university it’s not available, if you want somewhere to send images I can set up a Dropbox folder and post the link. Mike

  • What camera are you using, you can change aperture on ‘manual’ setting. Mike

  • F 2.8 is the biggest aperture f22 the smallest. Mike

  • Only by setting manual or ‘auto flash off’ on the command dial. Mike

  • I would use f22 and adjust the flash power for each magnification. Wouldn’t have thought the sensor would be the trouble, just send me an image of your rear screen to m.r.sharland@bham.ac.uk. Mike

  • You can do, but not sure how secure they are, never put any patient details with the image. Mike

  • Yes set to that, and just store RAW files as legal image, use jpg exclusively for all your presentation of the image Mike

  • Pretty well any Canon or Nikon is good for dental photography, except the Canon 4000D

  • You can only do this if you have a Canon ringflash, much easier to adjust on the back of the flash. Mike

  • Yes good choice, I think it has twin card slots so that is a useful feature. Mike

  • Hi Catalina...sigma 105 macro. Mike

  • Hi, difficult as Canon entry level cameras reportedly only work with expensive Canon ringflash >£700. So though I prefer Canon perhaps look at a set up using Nikon D5600 set up. See https://www.dentalphotographyinpractice.com/product-category/kits/ for details on Nikon set ups, click on one of the Nikon kits and this will tell you what you need. Mike

  • Either are absolutely fine 5600 is newer version of 5300. Mike

  • Yes that’s fine, it is a full frame camera so settings will be slightly different to the ones quoted.

  • For Nikon Sigma and Tamron do compatible lenses and most flashes have a Nikon or canon option. Mike

  • Is it a DSLR or.

  • Try removing the flash and re seating it and lock on. Mike

  • Hi, no problem, the whole idea of this course is to simplify as much as possible, flash synch is dealt with by choosing 1/200 so not really worth mentioning, for this course only thing students will need to understand is that if the power of the flash or size of aperture is increased or decreased exposure will get lighter or darker. Thanks for your comment. Mike

  • You can change either, with any flash set power to give you exposure you want at 1:3 magnification and f22. Mike

  • No,problem just use the flash power to adjust exposure. Mike

  • Great thanks. Mike

  • Thanks, hope you enjoy the course. Mike

  • Good idea

  • HimSarah, that’s fine. Mike

  • Yes is fine, as it’s a full frame camera some of the settings will be different. Mike

  • Hi Lena, Yongnuo is good but battery compartment lid is weak, better option would be the Meike ringflash, make sure you get the right one as they do a led light too. Meike should be about £80. If you are not sure then send me the link to mike@mikesharland.com. 90mm macro should be fine. Mike

  • D3000 is fine and Tamron lens is fine also, what ringflash do you have?If you have all the settings correct this should work fine. Mike

  • Presumably you have the Sigma macro lens, the canon 100mmm macro goes to f32, not a great problem, just adjust flash power for closer shots. Mike

  • Hi Poona, glad you found it useful.
If you go to my website www.dental photography practice.com and there is a link on the first page to Canon recommendation. Mike

  • Hi you only need a macro lens for dental photography.

  • Yes should do. Mike
