  • I'm curious, what will happen to Japan in some years to come with a decline of the pyramid at the bottom

  • The video is appealing which passes a message that this society really needs aid in a very appealing manner

  • @MelDeo I strongly agree with your submission. The way the media portrays Africa like it's headquarter of the world's poverty is irritating. All societies even the global north are dualistic but the media will not present the underdeveloped societies of the global north.

    1. The term development is subjected to individual perception about development. Hence, to me, development is the continuous processes and practices that bring about social change, economic growth, and human development.
    2. Poverty should be tackled first because I believe this is the root of inequality. The haves keeps the haves not impoverished that the...

  • Norway is 0.957 as the highest vs Somalia as the lowest 0.285
    Nigeria 0.539

  • The term development is contextual. As a resident of the third world, my definition and perception of development will be different from that of someone in the first world. To mean it may mean eradication of poverty, equality, and good governance while it may mean otherwise to the global north.

  • Development as a Vision, Practice, and process.

The term development is complex and ambiguous, however, it can simply be defined as the continuous process that brings about social change, economic growth, and human development. Development is not an end in itself rather a continuous process and practices for a country's improvement in both economic and...

  • Hi everyone,
My name is Saka Mariam, I'm from Nigeria. Currently, running my Masters degree in Political Economy and development studies and will like to have my Ph.D. degree in International development

  • Can't wait to explore what the course has to offer. Thanks

  • Hi, my name is Mariam. I am from Nigeria and I want to learn and explore the development space

  • One problem about African governments is continuity, each administration want to have a project credited to her name which makes us have a lot of abandoned projects which could have actually contributed to some extent growth of African nations. Also is the mind set of inferiority of local made products. Africans have to start consuming home made products for...

  • My thought is I think some clauses of the customary law and the traditional belief system should be adjusted because it gives different and unequal treatment to the members of the society. And it is this belief system that indoctrinated the male folks to see women as an object of sexuality that is not supposed to be seen and independent. I believe if the...

  • @JudithRoback
The problem stem from historical and external forces. But third world leaders could have come up with models and approaches suitable for development. For instance, most if not all African countries are blessed natural resources, adopting the UDT recommendations, African continent can actually look inward and harness her natural resources....

  • The external factors ranging from the first world also known as developed world, the bretton woods institutions, WTO conditionalities are too stringent for development. The way and manner third world are incorporated into the world capitalist system is exploitative. Third world are given the role of raw materials producer and consumer of finished product by...

  • Rostow's stages of development are actually a unilinear process or stages of development this theory has been criticized and is biased towards a western model as the only path towards development. According to W. W. Rostow, the major barriers to a nation’s development were perceived to be internal to that nation which could be bad government, poverty,...

  • The story is disturbing and made me teary. Third world countries have made the gender gap so wide that it will take a concerted effort of not just advocate from the third world but also the international system to help in addressing the wide gap in third world countries. Women are naturally nurturing and empathetic, once the standard of living of a woman...

  • My submission is that gender should be incorporated into the development paradigm. For instance, in Nigeria, is the NASS rejection of the gender bill which specifically demand more appointive positions for women, 35% affirmative action in party administration and leadership, specific seats for women in the National and State Assemblies, citizenship to the...

  • Gender (equality) is an integral process of development. All sectors ranging from agriculture, health, tech, etc. account for a high population of women who face segregation. For instance, Nigeria's economy has always been dependent on oil, hence some development theorists suggested diversification into agriculture of which women constitute 75% of Nigeria's...

  • Hi... I am Mariam Saka from Nigeria. I work as the Gender Lens Coordinator for a social enterprise. I am interested in this this course because I want to broaden my knowledge on the nexus between gender and development

  • King of Boys, it's a Nollywood movie. the director was a female in the person of Kemi Adetiba with a woman playing the lead character. the film revolves around a woman who chaired a male dominated association and who also want to carve a nitche for herself in Nigeria politics, the woman eventually became the Governor of Lagos in the movie so this film passed...

  • Women play roles that portray them as a sexualized object where they have to flaunt their body in a nude and seductive manner which actually devalues their womanhood. while the same media present the male dominant, strong and agile character

  • some of the key themes were gender inequality, intersectionality, vertical and horizontal segregation, gender mainstreaming , occupation gap etc

  • Male-dominated job is still a result of the traditional belief that some jobs are meant for male while some are exclusively reserved for female. Example Nursing career is believed to be a feminine career and which in reality dominated by the female while medicine and surgery are believed to be a male career but recently, the percentage of women in medicine has...

  • Workplace stereotyping is counterproductive because it does not give room for women to exhibit their professionalism and competency when jobs/roles are exclusively reserved for males.

  • Gender language such as Mr can refer to any man regardless of whether he is single or married while Miss depicts a single woman and Mrs depicts a married man. This language is a form of inequality. Even in the French language, words such as ils is gendered for masculinity while elle is for feminity. Hence, there should be gender neutral language, this will...

  • This is the first time I will be reading about intersectionality. I think inequality should be studied more from the intersectionality framework. Looking at so many factors that actually cause inequality

  • thanks to the instructor of this course. I learned the difference between genderfluid, binary, and not binary gender

  • Sex may mean person's physical characteristics at birth, and gender encompasses a person's identities, expressions, and societal roles. A person may identify with a gender that is different from their sex. Hence, sex is different gender. Society attributes gender role.
Sex difference should not lead to different behaviors. But certainly their are some sex...

  • Insightful

  • Society is not gender equal. If we take a critical look at the composition of our society ranging from family, to work, to politics, economy etc, the society we find ourselves from the ancient times till present era has always been in the favour of the male folk leaving the female folk relegated without considering the lethal effects of this inequality on the...

  • Hi, I'm Saka Mariam from Nigeria. Discrimination with respect to gender inequality in Nigeria is at the apex in the contemporary era.
Women face a lot of discrimination ranging in all spheres of life. Hence, the need to make the society understand that gender equality is synonymous to development and sustainability. Taking this course will further widen my...
