  • @PaoloDeStefani Very Good news. Not only him, but other perpetrators should be arrested and brought to justice.

  • Thank you

  • great

  • Implementation and enforcing these rules to the letter is the main issue.

  • International courts and tribunals, also International organisations virtually protect human rights.

  • Good lecture. The importance of UN conflict resolution is vital in the world we live. Any power can get up and over run another, just because of a little misunderstatnding.

  • It is an important topic about gender discrimination

  • It's great

  • I think all the points are important. But as much efforts are being made to bring justice to the perpetrators, efforts should be focused on how to rehabilitate the victims.

  • The abuse of children and the use of children during wars is a common practice. Generally, children suffer untold hardship in the time of war. Some may loose their parents or guidance thereby exposing them to more danger of fending for themselves. Many are used or forced to become child soldiers, or one form of participation or another.
    However, I support...

  • I appreciate efforts to protect children by promulgating statutes, enforcing and implementation of the laws.
Having passed through this situation aa a child during Nigeria -Biafra war which lasted for nearly three years, any effort to protect the children during crises is very important.

  • Good explanations

  • It is clear that children rights are protected during arms conflict, especially on children recruitment below 18 years old is against the law. However, we often see children below 18 years old in various places of war, signifying that these UN resolutions and laws are not adhered to by the states.

  • @BernadetteRayner I think so. I am not aware of the existence of these rights before the course. I agree with you that it should be taught in schools. In elementary schools, some part of human rights, while in secondary school, the major part of it.

  • It is important to study the cases well, be mindful of the places and actual events

  • In whatever objective and action to eradicate SGBV is good.

  • Good decision about creating SR to make detailed investigation and act to reduce the infringement on human rights.

  • I think it is a collective responsibility to tackle sexual violence.
Hence, the women are mostly the victims, and these could be our mothers, sisters, daughters, cousins or relatives. Whoever violates any body male or female, should be punished, and completely eradicate all forms of violence.

  • It is important for all countries to look into this and create awareness so as to reduce occurrences. The countries should adopt it as a policy and implement in their local laws.

  • Good lecture, thank you

  • Good lecture

  • These are great efforts to alleviate the sufferings and allow justice to take its course. These situations doesn't just occur. It's mostly as a result of conflict and conquest, the mentality of domination.
However, not allowing wars are better than supplying relief to endangered people or refegues. Efforts need to be made, to stop the politics of wars, giving...

  • These rules are sufficient. It needs wider knowledge and the implementation.

  • Sexual abuse is common on conquered territories and where minorities are being dominated.
It's unfortunate to note that these abuses were enshrined in the law, but the punitive measures to checkmate violators and offenders is very weak and slow.
In most places, politics, alliances and other vices like corruption are used to play it down.
    I will like to see...

  • It's sad having passed through this ugly experience during Nigeria - Biafra war, 1967-1970
It is not a thing to remember nor wish another person. Anyone found to be part of war crimes, especially against women , children and the aged, should be well punished.

  • The quiz is very useful

  • There are a lots of protection of states interests and that of political allies when it comes to international laws, appointments, and relationships. Hence, decisions on issues are by voting, nations interests are considered first before taking any form of decision.
For example, from 1967 to 1970, there was a civil war between Biafra separatists and Nigeria....

  • ICC tend to be discriminatory on bringing people to book. It should look beyond Africa. Most African problems are linked with the other countries.
Years back, Nigeria was in the US list of gross human right violators, also violators of religious freedom. For the past 4 years, more than 10,000 Christians were killed and over 4,000 churches has been raised by...

  • 'These days, International laws are considers as war crimes'
Thank you for a good lecture

  • Good lecture on the differences between International laws, International Human Rights laws and International Humanitarian laws.

  • The area of speedy investigation and removal of unnecessary bureaucracy in respect of human right breaches, emboldens violators across the globe.
I think, if the offenders are brought to book, thorough investigation and adequately punished, it will reduce the number of cases on human right abuses. People can live a much more civil life, free from all forms of...

  • Hi, I am Emmanuel, originally from (Igbo Biafra) currently in Nigeria. I reside in Brasil, and work with Federal Justice. I want to have good knowledge about International Criminal Law on Human Rights.

  • Good to be part of this. I'm looking forward to a great learning experience.

  • @RhiannaClaxton Exactly, your contribution is sound and helpful.

  • Women from my tribe Igbo currently in Nigeria are very beautiful. Our culture and tradition placed the right of a woman in her husband. Generally, it is our cultural belief that a woman will go away from her father's house to her husband's place and that is where she has right. She can never inherit father's properties with the brother. However, when she is...

  • The essence to participate is for learning and updating knowledge. Every other thing is additional. Everybody is important that is why you fill the space you are. Without you that space will be vacant. If another person is in your space, it is incomplete without you because you are unique.

  • No doubt, women has been discriminated for a long time. And that should be eradicated.

  • Good analysis

  • Women are imported and should have equal rights with men irrespective of cultural limitations. They are unique and should be respected.

  • Great to be part of this learning experience

  • Great course. I love it all thank you.

  • No doubt my perspective about UN and human rights changed after this course.
I will like to improve on this knowledge

  • Courts of binding jurisdictions are bound to follow similar judgement, and these facilitastes proceedings. It also encourages speedy hearings.
Among the regional systems, the oldest and most well-developed regional system for the protection of human rights is the European system.
Not all Inter-American states fully adopted the Human right laws. Hence America...

  • Good lectures about Human right Bodies

  • Truly, the special procedures of human right council is a good process.
However, it takes a whole lot of time to investigate, make deliberations and decisions, before undertaking countries visits. These and other bureaucratic processes, delays action and before human right comes in, many people are killed or unjustly, incarcerated or maltreated. This led to...

  • Human rights are arbitrarily violated in many states. For example in Africa where tribes and languages play vital cultural different roles, one can see the dominant political leaders subjugating the other hated or minor tribes to all forms of inhuman treatment.
Falsifying, accusing and imputing crimes deadly crimes on them so as to punish and most times kill...

  • Good lecture about the Human Rights council

  • Good lecture

  • How UN Human Rights Commission 1946-2006 ended< after eficient 20 years good records.
    Vital information

  • S V Makwanyane and others, 1995, The court held that "the death sentence destroys life, which is protected without reservation under section 9 of our Constitution, it annihilates human dignity which is protected under section 10, elements of arbitrariness are present in its enforcement and it is irremediable [...]. I am satisfied that in the context of our...

  • The treaties are the core font of each Theme and decision.
The are the outcome of each deliberation on in the convention.

  • The desire of member states is to have their sovereignty, without the control of any stronger power or law to dictate how their state is being ruled.
Human right laws are like a hammer on flagrant and abusive member states over human rights.'
Normally, the function of government is to make laws to controle the...

  • It is true that UN set standard and try to enforce it via a world court

  • Looking forward to a great week

  • Great lectures and good information
    Thank you

  • States try as much as possible to defend itself even when the facts are clear.
Today, you can easily report cases, through the social media and even with these, some stets still prefere to deliberately infringe on the human right of the people. The world id full of politics.
In 967 during Biafra Nigeria war, Britain and Rushia alliegned with Nigeria to kill...

  • The issue of sovereignty is a major excuse as some states rely upon this, to violate human rights of the people.
Many people has been unjustly treated, punished or killed as the case may be in several UN member states, that adopted UDHR.
Even as at now, it's being reported of some states are still violating human rights.
Although, there are many UN NGO's,...

  • Brazil is a party to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is committed to guaranteeing equality, dignity, and freedom for all people. Despite being a signatory, the domestic conditions for human rights are far from ideal in Brazil.
Preamble of the constitution of brasil. We, the representatives of the Brazilian People, convened in the
    National...

  • Eleanor Roosevelt played a major role as the first Chairperson of the UN commission on Human rights.
    it is a major landmark.

  • The 48 states that voted and signed the charter on human rights. Eight states abstained. This is political, hence they do dot want to vote for human right laws, they were absent because they don't want to be part of it's approval or seem to be odd. The best thing is to be absent.

  • These principles are essential in shaping of the Universal declaration of human rights. In today's world, it will not go a long way.
Because of prejudice, and clash of sociocultural and religion influences, it is difficult to stand.

  • Great contribution to human rights

  • Roosevelt's state of the union address and The Atlantic Charter, between him and Winston Churchill, did not mention human right, however, these rights was a huge source for the declaration of human rights in 1945.

  • Due to divers sociopolitical, religion and cultural believes in some states, they are not fully adopting the Universal declaration of human rights. Even some nations that are signatory to the human right laws, also flout the laws. Example A Biafra separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, (A naturalised British citizen, traveled to kenya with his British international...

  • While it is important that human right laws are adhered to by the states, it is also imperative to note that despite the International courts that adjudicate relevant cases of human right abuses, I still think that some states are still not strictly, obeying the laws. And these International continental courts delay a lot in the investigation and sometimes...

  • Although, I live in Brasil, I am originally from Igbo nation of Biafra, presently in Nigeria. It is in our culture that the right of a woman is in her husbands place.
A girl in our tribe does not have the right of inheritance in her father's house, whether married or unmarried. As far as I am concerned, it is discriminatory and denies a girl of her rights in...

  • It will be a great week, and hope to benefit from the learning experience.

  • Very educative and interesting

  • I believe that the historical events all over the world and over the years contributed in no small measure the idea of the declaration of human rights.

  • I will like to read J. S Mill On Liberty 1859

  • In the universal declaration of human rights Article 3 Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
United Nations in this treaty on soldiers medical treatment, to avoid contradiction on human right to life, approved treatment of wounded soldiers.
This treaty of treating soldiers of both sides guarantees protection and preservation of...

  • Wars and killing to dominate and take over territories or impose authority was common in those days when no universal laws existed.
Life was brutal and short. There was no control nor general order.
Stronger states run over others and dominate them.

  • The postulations of John Locke "State of Nature" says how state use it's power to dispossess others of their possession, and impose laws. This has something to do with tax and fines,we pay , and when you fail to pay , you are incarcerated.
JJ Rousseau 'Man is born free' is a defense to the liberty of the people.
J.S Mill is talking about the state...

  • All these philosopher's point of views somehow, contributed to the shaping of UN human right laws, which some democratic states adopted, as part of their constitution.

  • Actually, these men, John Locke, J,J Rousseau ans J.S Mill, with profound and analytical postulations contributed to the modern International law on human rights. Thanks to them and others who in one way or the other brought these facts out and created human rights awareness.

  • Magna carta was actually important as to reduce somewhat the monarchical power King, against the people, which was originally absolute. And this carta may have somehow formed part of the Universal declaration on human right. Because some rights mentioned in the magna carta a quoted in Article 39, paragraph 40, and 61 actually had some similarities with some...

  • The Universal declaration of Human Right is important and right.
However, in my opinion, there are no strong punitive measures against violators. The process of bringing violators to book is very slow and sluggish.
I think more efforts could be made to implement this law. Many have suffered and died without justice, from the infrator against human rights....

  • Vital information on the sources of International human right laws.
    Good lecture

  • I observed that in public discourse on human rights, most people tend to apply the laws as much as possible. It is easily spoken and well explained than to put it in practice.
Infringement on human rights, is common in most countries. Some states are lawless and do not practice what the law says. They will find excuses to trample upon the rights of...

  • Good lecture on the origin and formation of Human Rights by the United Nation.
It is important to note that these basic law on Human Rights ought to be taught in schools, for people to be educated on their rights. Unfortunately, many states still disrespect the right of people.

  • I only studied a branch of commercial law during my accounting professional course and never studied anything about any other part of law including International law.
