My mothers side of my family were farmers on Walney Island at the time Fox visited the Furness region and their surname was Fell.I have a copy of Registers of Fells and their connections published by the Fell Association in 1885.This document lists Quaker Fells back to 1653.

I never stand up for a national anthem at a sporting event and will never display the Union Jack or flag of St George.I object to the British Consevative Party using the flag
I also found the Brexit vote an extreme example of Nationalism which has deprived me,my family and friends of many freedoms. -

It has recently come to light that the purse and other items were made at the instigation of Scott and his friend Jock McVitie as can be seen in the latest edition of The Swirling Kilt.

My ancestors came from the Debateable Land and my DNA links me to the Grahams.I also remember refereeing rugby at Percy Park.
What would Scott have thought of the portrayal of Lord Percy in the Black Adder series?
Also in the 18th Century my Hogg ancestor married a Scott and I am led to believe we have a link to James Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd. -

I could be described as a serious teacher and researcher into the past but it was the Black Adder series and recently Upstart Crow that have given me greatest pleasure but then I am of the generation that enjoyed the critical humour of Spitting Image.
Thankfully I live in a country that allows freedom of artist expression unlike that of the Tudor period. -

I have been very fortunate to be able to laugh at history as many in the world do not have that opportunity.Nor do they have the opportunity to laugh at the present.
My worry is that many young history teachers use these TV series without critical research even though one could put forward an arguement that humour introduces us to a topic.

I lived and taught for over 30 years in the Lancaster and old Westmorland region and obtained a Diploma in Local History from Liverpool University.In addition I produced a booklet on the history of Arnside.I spent many quiet hours researching in record offices prior to computers.

I strongly suggest that we all read and consider thoughtfully the material in the book AGE OF DISCOVERY by Ian Goldin and Chris Kutarin,published by Bloomsbury.It is about the risks and rewards of what they term our New Renaissance.

I lived for many years in Arnside and was born in Millom.I taught for many years in North Lancashire and now reside in Sutton,Surrey.Have visited the wall many times and recently stayed in Rome as my sister has lived near Florence for many years.

My ancestors came from Canonbie just across the border from Longtown and you can check out fascinating information by searching for Longtown records.
Many of my Hogg cousins now reside in the Sidney region and further north.
James Hogg,the Ettrick Poet is probably related as are the criminal family mentioned in those Longtown records.

I have a copy dated 1885 of a REGISTER OF FELLS and their connections produced by THE FELL ASSOCIATION OF FURNESS.This gives Ulverston church records back to 1545 and Quaker records for Swarthmoor,Kendal and Yealand back to 1653.

My mother comes from the Fell farming family of Walney Island not far from Swarthmore Hall and in 1652 George Fox was stoned as he landed at the village of North Scales but was protected by John Lancaster who then helped him on his travels.
Fell is a very old name in the Furness region and probably is of Viking origin. -
