Thanks to all and as my Fell ancestors lived in the Furness region.I have lists of Quaker christenings of that period.
Some 40 years ago when attending a church service at Christmas for the local primary school my sons attended in Arnside across the bay from Swarthmoor I was about to stand up and state what nonsense belief in a god or gods was.I did not as I...

  • My mothers side of my family were farmers on Walney Island at the time Fox visited the Furness region and their surname was Fell.I have a copy of Registers of Fells and their connections published by the Fell Association in 1885.This document lists Quaker Fells back to 1653.
Also a pleasure to see that Angus Winchester is still plying his trade as I was one...

  • My family are scattered throughout the planet and I am married to a Russian.I am also an historian and now retired have far more time to read/study and have participated in many excellent Futurelearn courses.

  • Many thanks for stimulating my thought process.Would this course be allowed in authoritarian environments?

  • The map of the Ukraine on their teams football shirts includes the Crimea and this offends Russia.

  • I never stand up for a national anthem at a sporting event and will never display the Union Jack or flag of St George.I object to the British Consevative Party using the flag
I also found the Brexit vote an extreme example of Nationalism which has deprived me,my family and friends of many freedoms.

  • Retired teacher and historian living in Sutton,Surrey,UK with family around the planet.Worried about major threats to democracy and the rise of authoritarian regimes.

  • You have given me a valuable insight into the life and works of a man much respected throughout the planet.
I wish to thank all involved and stay safe during these difficult times.

  • It has recently come to light that the purse and other items were made at the instigation of Scott and his friend Jock McVitie as can be seen in the latest edition of The Swirling Kilt.
It appears that Scott was in financial difficulty and Hamish Graham his accountant was worried about unpaid bills to numerous tradesmen and threats on his life from the...

  • I assume that the earlier versions were performed under the influence of drink despite the views of the Kirk therefore as the night wore on the performances would naturally vary.

  • My ancestors came from the Debateable Land and my DNA links me to the Grahams.I also remember refereeing rugby at Percy Park.
What would Scott have thought of the portrayal of Lord Percy in the Black Adder series?
Also in the 18th Century my Hogg ancestor married a Scott and I am led to believe we have a link to James Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd.

  • My memory of childhood is very limited which I very much regret however whenever I visit a place of my youth there is a feeling that tugs at my heart.

  • Welcome.I am a retired teacher of history and research family history.
My Hogg ancestors come from Canonbie on the English/Scottish border in what was referred to as The Debatable Land.Although having no poetic skills I believe that I may be related to The Ettrick Shepherd,James Hogg.

  • A clear brief explanation of invaluable work produced by thoughtful intelligent inhabitants of our beautiful but dangerous planet.Thank you all.

  • An excellent course experience.Thank you all and my sincere wish is that soon we can all experience a peaceful and interesting planet.Take care please.

  • What a dreadful example of the human race this individual was but he had and still has many followers.

  • A humanist with a great curiosity about the past, present and future of our planet.Thank you for offering this opportunity to aid that desire.

  • Interesting and thought provoking.

  • Retired teacher,historian,cricket and rugby coach.Family international-Japan,Italy,Russia,Ukraine,Scotland,Thailand,Australia,New Zealand.Friends in Brazil.
Former resident in Cumbria and now attempting to enjoy lockdown in Sutton,Surrey.

  • Trump,Brexit,Covid and now for variety.

  • Wishing to gain insight into the past that has rarely been touched upon.

  • The fear of splits in the Tory party are still damaging the UK.

  • Both church and monarchy have a vested interest in working together in order to survive.

  • Does that mean that as an atheist I cannot reside in Indonesia?

  • I desire a secular state with no tax relief for an religious groups but believe that schools should educate about various world faiths.

  • France

  • If there was a God what religion would he/she wish to be in charge of?

  • Joyce you have taken the words right out of my mouth /finger.Thank you.

  • As a republican and atheist I object to religion and monarchy having such an influence on my life. What would be the chances of my obtaining high political office should I openly admit my views?

  • John I totally agree with your comments.

  • I would have no uniforms at all but request that all students wear safe clothing as defined by the school governing body.

  • I am a resident British citizen and retired teacher.I live on the outskirts of London.I am an atheist who is interested in why others have other beliefs and I am very fortunate to have the freedom to express my views without the state persecuting me.

  • Is this yet another example of God and Mammon plc rewarding a few at the expense of the many or am I being too left of centre?

  • It is the term GREAT that is questionable.

  • A curious historian with time to spare in his declining years.

  • Some men desire power and wealth and the Public Schools of Britain fostered this as did the Church.

  • Should the present monarch pay Richards back dated parking charge?

  • I do not read novels but have a creative mind.

  • I could be described as a serious teacher and researcher into the past but it was the Black Adder series and recently Upstart Crow that have given me greatest pleasure but then I am of the generation that enjoyed the critical humour of Spitting Image.
Thankfully I live in a country that allows freedom of artist expression unlike that of the Tudor period.

  • I have been very fortunate to be able to laugh at history as many in the world do not have that opportunity.Nor do they have the opportunity to laugh at the present.
My worry is that many young history teachers use these TV series without critical research even though one could put forward an arguement that humour introduces us to a topic.
    I doubt that even...

  • Would Andrew Marr have survived during this period?

  • No monarch is legitimate.Whoever controls the financial strings and propaganda rules.Even today.

  • I am a curious person and would love to know more about the period my ancestors lived and obviously survived as I am here in 2019.

  • As an atheist I would have found it difficult to obtain a position as Headteacher in a church school in the U.K. or marry into the royal family.I should of course disclose that neither position would have appealed to me.

  • Welcome to you all.I am Peter a retired teacher in the U.K.My family and I have been very fortunate to have had lives free of persecution and have never lacked for food, water,a comfortable home and loving environments.
I would like my fellow inhabitants of this fascinating but frustrating planet to be as lucky as I have been.

  • Have the so called witches ever been pardoned and is it time for James 1 and many other monarchs to be regarded as murderers?
Should we have historical courts as recently Nazi guards are still being tried and found guilty?
When does the passing of time ignore guilt and basic humanity to become tourist attraction?
    Thank you for the course.

  • I lived and taught for over 30 years in the Lancaster and old Westmorland region and obtained a Diploma in Local History from Liverpool University. In addition I produced a booklet on the history of Arnside.I spent many quiet hours researching in record offices prior to computers.

  • Incomers to a settled community are regarded as a threat if they speak, behave and look different. This is less obvious in times of prosperity.

  • I appreciate your comments.Thank you.@NikkiCole

  • I live on the planet Quelch 768 and wish to reside on your planet. Can you advise me as to which country would be best suited?

  • If you believe in a god then you are less likely to obtain my vote even though I believe in your right to have and discuss your belief.

  • The broader the education and the greater freedom an indivIdual has then the less likely they are to believe in any god or holy book.

  • Or. I will appoint you only if you smoke and believe in my god.

  • I am not appointing you to the position as teacher at my school because you are a smoker and believer in a god. What are the views of course members to this comment?

  • PETER DAVID HOGG made a comment

I strongly suggest that we all read and consider thoughtfully the material in the book AGE OF DISCOVERY by Ian Goldin and Chris Kutarin, published by Bloomsbury. It is about the risks and rewards of what they term our New Renaissance.
Have a positive and rewarding life.

  • We should encourage Americans to vote against Trump and advise all nations to refuse his desires to construct golf courses etc.

  • Holding these views would rule out a teacher from obtaining a position in most parts of the planet. Also I would imagine that a very small minority of politicians would be elected. What a pity.
Is a child a humanist prior to parents, religion etc getting to work?

  • Bom dia Nathi.I have visited my friends in Sorocaba,Sao Paula.Enjoy your interesting work.

  • Many thanks for the advice.

  • A perfectly paced course for relaxed study.

  • A clear well paced course.

  • I am a retired teacher living in Surrey,UK.I have a BA degree in History and Diploma in Local History from Liverpool University.I produced a brief history of my former home in Arnside,Cumbria and have been researching into my Hogg family connections in Canonbie a small town in the former Debatable Land on the Anglo-Scottish border.I would love to have access...

  • An interesting course which reinforced my wish never to visit the region especially in the reign of Trump but thank you for the course material.

  • As expected.No comment.

  • Yet again an example of religious bigotry. It is remarkable that so many black Americans cling to what was essentially a white belief.Am I correct in thinking that the so called Bible Belt voted for Trump?
Was God neutral in the Civil War or had he a vested interest in the result?

  • What an interesting planet you guys inhabit.I visit regularly and find it so different from my region of space.Thank you for further enlightening me.

  • A stimulating body of research.Thankfully my ancestors reached child bearing age.

  • I can only hope that Trump is part of a fantasy world and not reality.

  • Many thanks for a stimulating course.I would be interested to know if any DNA research has been carried out on those at present living near the wall with a long history of their family residing in the region e.g. Farming communities.

  • A modern day Mason could feel at home in this environment.

  • An interesting exercise would be to ask children throughout the planet to illustrate what they think a god looks like. Then to ask adults.Possibly a risky task in some areas of the planet.Would it have been similar in the Roman world?

  • At Xmas we worship the great god SALE especially if he/she offers up to 70% off.

  • Obviously a local shepherd out with his trusty hound decided to frequent a local brothel after a night of heavy drinking of the local brew and was done to death by a group of Syrian soldiers at the landlords request.Later his wife produced a sharpened pole and plunged it deep into his skull to teach him a further lesson as he had not paid his dental...

My surname and DNA results indicate a close link to the wall.
Perhaps if Trump was representing the SNP the wall...

  • My ancestors came from Canonbie just across the border from Longtown and you can check out fascinating information by searching for Longtown records.
Many of my Hogg cousins now reside in the Sidney region and further north.

  • PETER DAVID HOGG made a comment

I have a copy dated 1885 of a REGISTER OF FELLS and their connections produced by THE FELL ASSOCIATION OF FURNESS.This gives Ulverston church records back to 1545 and Quaker records for Swarthmoor,Kendal and Yealand back to 1653.
I would be delighted to use this material to aid the research of others.

  • Thank you.

  • My mother comes from the Fell farming family of Walney Island not far from Swarthmore Hall and in 1652 George Fox was stoned as he landed at the village of North Scales but was protected by John Lancaster who then helped him on his travels.
Fell is a very old name in the Furness region and probably is of Viking origin.

  • PETER DAVID HOGG made a comment

The course is teaching me a great deal and the more I learn the more I understand that many Quaker beliefs are similar to those of other religions. We are right and you are wrong but we are not so bombastic.

  • Quaker furniture, porridge and banks ok but please no God or Satan.

  • As a former student of Angus it was a pleasure to hear his clarity of thought and enthusiasm.I remain a very badly organised student but wish to thank him for stimulating my mind.As an atheist I worry greatly about those who believe they have received the truth and wish to persuade others.
My mother was from the line of the Fell family of Walney and I have a...
