Learning outcomes

  • Explain what is included in an environmentally sound management (ESM) framework
  • Identify, based on a case study, how ESM can be achieved through co-operation and guidance at international, regional, national, and facility level
  • Describe one step towards ESM that could be made by your facility, town, or country
  • Identify opportunities that arise through thinking of e-waste as a resource rather than a problem

Syllabus

  • Environmentally Sound Management (ESM): Learn the principles of ESM as defined by the Basel Convention. Understand how hazardous wastes are managed to protect human health and the environment.
  • E-waste prevention: Explore strategies such as eco-design principles, product longevity, and circular economy models to minimize e-waste generation.
  • Policy instruments: Examine tools like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), deposit-refund systems, and landfill taxes to incentivise proper e-waste management.
  • Collection systems: Analyse models for e-waste collection, including informal sector integration, retailer take-back programs, and community-based initiatives.
  • Worst vs. good practices: Compare unsound practices like open burning and illegal trading with good practices that mitigate environmental harm and improve worker safety.
  • Technology innovation: Discover innovative recycling technologies for metals recovery and their application in developing economies.
