FAQ

The definition of diabetes is a chronic (persistent) health condition that impacts the way the body turns food into energy. It’s related to the way insulin is produced (or not produced) There are two main types; type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is where the body does not make insulin at all - the immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that create it. People suffering from type 1 diabetes have to take insulin each day to stay alive.

With type 2 diabetes, the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, meaning that glucose stays in the blood instead of being used for energy. A change in diet, medication, and regular check-ups are often needed with this type of diabetes.

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes isn’t known, despite extensive research. Type 2 diabetes is often developed later in life, and risk factors include a person’s age, ethnicity, blood pressure, and whether they’re overweight. Diabetes research is ongoing.

Only a doctor or medical professional can conclusively determine whether a person has diabetes. They will often use either the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test or the A1C test to diagnose diabetes.
