Abbie Marsh

has completed the following course:

Fluid Dynamics in Practice: Applications to Real-World Challenges

University of Leeds

This course connected maths and physics principles to real-world decisions made by engineers and scientists. The course explored how measuring, modelling, and predicting fluid dynamics kept society safe and secure, including reducing airborne infection and modelling extreme weather. It demonstrated key principles of fluid movement and how datasets can be visualised. The course explored the broad impact of fluid dynamics and uncovered exciting degrees and career opportunities.

  • Explain the impact of fluid dynamics across different areas of people’s lives and the environment
  • Describe the role played by experimental, theoretical and computational models and how they inform decisions taken in the real world
  • Explore the range of UG and PG degrees available at Leeds that offer further study of fluid dynamics
  • Identify the career opportunities open to graduates who have studied fluid dynamics

Syllabus

Week 1: Basic principles of fluid dynamics

  • How fluids behave, including laminar and turbulent flow
  • Predicting fluid behaviour with the Bernoulli equation, and computational modelling techniques.

Week 2: Fluid dynamics in people’s lives and environment

  • Impact of fluid dynamics on breath movement and the effectiveness of mitigation measures such as masks and ventilation systems.
  • Role of fluid dynamics in understanding and predicting weather patterns, including the formation and behaviour of hurricanes and tropical storms.
  • Degrees incorporating elements of fluid dynamics, opportunities for further study and research, and potential career paths leveraging this knowledge.
