You’re going to get access to our full online personal statement course. Now that includes nine video lessons, nine booklets accompanying each lesson, information about all the medical schools in the UK, and their application criteria, some example personal statements with detailed analysis, and advice about the career as a whole. When we were going through this process, exactly the same process that you are all going through right now. YouTube videos, blogs, and articles gave a lot of generic advice, but it didn’t actually help us write anything. And so we want to put this right.

The upcoming lessons are how to apply to medicine. Then we’re going to focus on the personal statement basics before learning how to gather experience. After that, we’re going to learn about how to actually write your personal statement, covering the structure and writing style. And then we’re going to go through each of the sections paragraph by paragraph learning how to sculpt the personal statement. Our aim is to help students from all backgrounds write their best personal statement by taking you step by step through our systematic method which has proven to be very successful.

    Preparing to write your personal statement

    • Gathering Experience

      In this activity we will explore the work experience, volunteering and reading that will provide the substance of your personal statement. Apply what you will learn in this activity to seek out your own experiences to write about.

    • Writing your Personal Statement

      In this activity we will go over the style and structure of a personal statement. We will use an example statement to enable you to think critically about what makes a personal statement strong.

  • Week 3

    Writing your personal statement

    • The Opening Paragraph

      It is time to start writing your personal statement. It is important to open with a strong first paragraph that grabs the reader's attention and clearly states your reason to study medicine.

    • Work Experience Paragraph

      Including work experience is key to demonstrating your suitability to medicine, however communicating what you have learnt from the experiences and their relevance is a skill that we will develop in this activity of the course.

    • Academic Interests and Key Attributes

      In this activity we will go over an important and often neglected component of a personal statement. Excelling in this section can help you stand apart from your competitors.

    • Conclusion and Final Tips

      In this last activity, we will develop the skills to construct a final paragraph that ties together your points and fully captures your desire to study medicine.

This course is aimed for students in years 12 and 13 (lower sixth and upper sixth) - both in the UK and abroad - who are interested in applying to medical or dental school within the UK.

I am a final year medical student studying at the University of Cambridge. I am passionate about developing high quality resources to help prospective medical students.

I study medicine at the University of Cambridge and hold a degree in Natural Sciences. My goal is to help aspiring medics achieve their goals through the delivery of high quality courses.
