On this four week course, you’ll immerse yourself in the dynamic timeline of LGBTQIA+ history, where you’ll discover significant events and figures that have shaped the movement. From the early days of criminalisation to groundbreaking legal reforms and societal shifts, understanding this history is crucial.

You’ll learn how pivotal moments, such as the Stonewall riots and the fight for marriage equality, have contributed to current perceptions and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Delve into the complexities of intersectionality within protected groups

By examining real-world examples and case studies, you’ll better understand how overlapping identities can result in compounded discrimination or privilege. This course aims to equip you with the insights to support diverse narratives and advocate for all facets of the LGBTQIA+ community effectively.

Develop impactful strategies for social inclusivity and change

Building on historical and intersectional knowledge, this course empowers you to develop and implement strategies for fostering inclusivity and driving social change.

    Exploring LGBTQIA+

    • Welcome to LGBTQIA+

      In this activity, you will be introduced to the FutureLearn platform and to this course. You will also get to know your fellow participants in your first discussion.

    • What does LGBTQIA+ mean?

      This activity defines LGBTQIA+, explores its origins, key legislation, and essential terms. This knowledge helps you understand and support LGBTQIA+ team members effectively, creating an inclusive workplace.

    • Why is it important to address LGBTQIA+ issues specifically?

      This activity examines LGBTQIA+ issues, including power dynamics, language, health, and prejudice. We'll discuss how these factors contribute to systemic inequalities and create a more inclusive environment.

    • How can we create safe environments for the LGBTQIA+ community?

      In this activity, you will explore and identify actionable changes you can make in your own working practices to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

    Exploring the context

    • What has gone before?

      Explore LGBTQIA+ history, struggles, and achievements. Examine key events, legislation, and cultural shifts that shaped the movement. Appreciate progress made while recognising ongoing efforts needed for equality and inclusion.

    • Why does the past matter?

      Examine historical context of LGBTQIA+ movement. Understand how past shaped current societal attitudes and legal frameworks. Explore struggles and triumphs of LGBTQIA+ community. Appreciate progress made and challenges.

    • How do we change the narrative around LGBTQIA+ communities?

      Reflect on LGBTQIA+ narratives, how they're formed, and how to change them for inclusivity and accuracy. Consider your role in shaping these narratives and share strategies for promoting positive representations.

    • Putting principles into practice

      In this activity, you are going to take action and identify changes you can make in your own working practices.

  • Week 3

    Exploring intersectionality

    • What is intersectionality?

      Learn about intersectionality, a concept by Kimberlé Crenshaw, exploring how race, gender, sexuality, and class intersect to create unique experiences of discrimination and privilege, crucial for addressing complex challenges.

    • Why is understanding intersectionality important?

      Explore the impact of intersectionality on LGBTQIA+ individuals in other minoritised groups. Learn how considering full identities promotes effective support and equity through examples and discussions.

    • How can we be allies for LGBTQIA+ people as well as other protected groups?

      Explore practical allyship for LGBTQIA+ and other protected groups. Learn the importance of intersectionality, strategies for advocacy, and actionable steps to foster inclusivity through examples and discussions.

      In this activity, you are going to take action and identify changes you can make in your own working practices.

  • Week 4

    Exploring your role as a manager?

    • What is our role as a manager?

      This week, we'll explore how managers can educate themselves and others to create and sustain an inclusive workplace culture, focusing on fostering an environment where all employees feel valued and respected.

    • Why is data collection important?

      This activity explores the importance of collecting data on sexual orientation and trans status to better understand and address the needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

    • How can we have a meaningful impact as managers?

      This activity explores how managers can create an inclusive workplace by asking the right questions, forming staff networks, and reducing health inequalities, fostering an environment where all employees feel valued.

    • Putting principles into practice

      In this activity, you are going to take action and identify changes you can make in your own working practices.

    • Final thoughts

      In this activity, we will look back across this course at what we have learned, identifying key learning points from our journey together.
