Managing Time and Resources
This Topic builds upon the precedence planning considered in the first course, and looks at ways to manage the time dimension of the project. The critical path is an important indicator of time and progress: its potential to assist in the management of time will be explored.
Closely related to the critical path is the management of float. The different types of float are considered and critically analysed, particularly with respect to their effect on the time and other resource aspects of the project.
Developing the management of float, the Topic considers the use of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) which provides a method by which project time can be managed by managing the float in an integrated way. Methods of how to accelerate projects are considered, together with methods to achieve time/cost optimisation and to manage the trade-offs between time, cost and performance.
The technique of Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and its use to provide greater clarity in activity and overall duration estimates is examined.
