In this course our key topics include:

  • Exploring the concept of Gender and how it is now considered an integral part of development
  • Analysing the concept of Development – what does it mean, what is its history, have we arrived yet?
  • Investigating whether the association of gender with development is making a positive difference in people’s lives
  • Considering how can thinking about development improve the life experiences of people in diverse contexts?

Who will you learn with?

Dr Maree Pardy, is an anthropologist and lectures in Community and International Development. She researches and publishes in the areas of gender & cultural diversity, human rights and global change.

Francis is an interdisciplinary academic focussed on questions of justice and transformation. They have taught in Gender, Sexuality & Diversity Studies; Politics; Philosophy; and Development Studies.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify and critically analyse the gendered dimensions of contemporary international and community development
  • Critically evaluate the evolution of theories of gender and sexuality in the context of gender and development
  • Generate informed approaches to address intersecting issues of gender, culture and development
  • Apply community development principles and practices to contextually informed gender interventions
