has completed the following course:

Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Optimising LPBF Parameters

EIT RawMaterials and KU Leuven

This course gave an overview of parameters that need to be taken into account in order to produce high quality metal parts through LPBF. Further, this course focused on the steps that you can take to optimise parameters when producing new materials with LPBF. Different optimisation strategies to increase productivity were also explored. Finally, this course gave a brief introduction to the physics of melt pool formation during the LPBF process which gives a deeper understanding of metal LPBF.

Transcript

Learning outcomes

  • Describe what happens during melt pool formation: which physical phenomena take place at macro-scale, meso-scale and micro-scale.
  • Explain how keyhole melt mode and conduction melt mode are formed and identify influential parameters for them.
  • Describe process parameters, environmental parameters, material parameters and part parameters that are important in LPBF.
  • Explain how LPBF parameters can be optimized when investigating new materials.
  • Identify strategies for optimizing the surface quality in down-facing and up-facing surfaces and for increasing the productivity.

Syllabus

Over the duration of this course, you’ll learn about:

  • Melt pool formation at macro-scale, meso-scale and micro-scale levels
  • Influencing factors for melt pool formation
  • Influential LPBF parameters: process parameters, environmental parameters, material parameter and part parameters
  • Parameter optimisation for new materials: single line track analysis, part density, residual stresses
  • Optimisation strategies for down-facing and up-facing surfaces
