Examine the ethics and impacts of AI on our shared future

AI is rapidly shaping the world around us. On this three-week course, you’ll critically examine the role of ethics in the development and deployment of AI technologies, with a focus on social justice, inclusion, and sustainability.

Explore ethical theory and apply this to AI

Build your understanding of AI—what it is, how it works, and why ethics are crucial to its development.

You’ll examine descriptive, normative, and virtue ethics frameworks to learn how philosophical approaches apply to AI design and implementation.

Then you’ll explore the digital divide and how bias can emerge through data and be perpetuated through algorithms.

Evaluate the human and societal impact of AI

Move beyond the technical world of AI. On this course you’ll explore how AI is shaping learning, healthcare, and environmental outcomes, with both positive and negative effects.

From inclusive education to existential risks, real-world examples will help you think deeply about governance, accountability, and the future of AI.

AI Ethics, Inclusion & Society

Through discussions and interactive activities, you’ll consider the voices shaping AI development. Explore how AI can amplify discrimination or act as a force for social good.

By the end of this course you’ll be able to evaluate global responses to AI governance and imagine what a more inclusive and ethically aware digital future might look like.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

    AI & Ethics Introduction

    • Course Introduction

Meet our team, find out what makes us tick and why we're animated by AI ethics and inclusion. Understand why we believe student co-creation sets this course apart and discover how to optimise your learning during this MOOC.

    • Introduction to AI

In this section, we will define AI, explore a little historical context, and move towards understanding large language models and some of their behaviours we should be cautious of.

    • Introduction to Ethics

Gain insight into prominent ethical theories, how and why they have emerged in society. Take ideas from these theories forward in learning and apply ethical perspectives to AI.

    • AI and the Student Experience

Consider ways in which AI is a crucial part of the current student experience. Deepen understanding of ethical learning, digital literacy, risks, bias, opportunities, and positive AI for learners.

    • Week 1 Conclusion

Here you'll find a brief video summarising the topics explored and the learning gained this week, followed by a glance at what awaits in Week 2.

  • Week 2

    Existential & Governance

    • Week 2 Introduction

This short video is an introduction to the topics explored in Week 2, The Existential & Governance. It is aimed at helping you plan and navigate your learning journey.

    • AI and Existential Risk

This week begins by exploring "existential risk", defining and understanding "X-risks", "longtermism", "effective altruism" and the "doomsday narrative".

    • AI and Media Narratives

Media narratives are rarely completely impartial, and can easily fall into polarised debate and siloed echo chambers, depending on narrator motivation. It is important to ask ourselves: who is telling this story and why?

    • Towards Better AI Narratives

Can we propose and enact solutions to the polarised narrative problem and begin to adopt more critically objective views of AI and emerging technologies, that favour ethics, citizenship, and equity?

    • AI Governance: who decides?

This module aims to explore the biases that may arise when training AI, as well as the biases that can be perpetuated when humans use AI. You will be encouraged to form your own opinions and critically analyse potential risks.

    • Governance at a Glance

This section gives a brief overview of the biggest legislation in the US and EU, attempts to govern AI. We are asked to consider if holistic and effective AI governance is realistic in today's political climate.

    • Looking to the Future

This section encourages learners to develop our own opinions around AI and data governance and to foster a more critical outlook, to promote an informed and conscious use of AI tools.

    • Week 2 Conclusion

This short video summarises the topics we have explored this week, AI the existential and data governance. It also provides a glimpse of what we will learn in Week 3.

  • Week 3

    Environment & Healthcare

    • Week 3 Introduction
