Join the quest to recreate the power of the stars

What if the answer to the world’s future energy needs already existed at the heart of the stars?

Around the world, scientists and engineers are working towards one of humanity’s most ambitious goals: turning nuclear fusion from scientific theory into a reliable source of clean energy.

If successful, fusion power could transform how we generate energy for generations to come.

On this online course from the University of York, you’ll step inside the science, technologies, and ideas driving the future of fusion energy, exploring the promise and challenges of bringing it to life.

From plasma physics to emerging technologies and future careers, the course introduces the people, systems, and discoveries shaping one of the fastest-growing scientific fields today.

Follow the science behind fusion energy

Begin by unpacking what fusion energy is and why researchers believe it could reshape the future of global energy systems.

You’ll investigate the conditions needed for nuclear fusion reactions to happen and examine how plasma physics sits at the centre of modern fusion research.

Examine the technologies bringing fusion closer to reality

Attention then turns to the technologies designed to make fusion reactors possible.

You’ll explore the engineering decisions, technological approaches, and innovations - including superconductors, novel tungsten alloys and digital twins - that support the development of fusion power systems.

Discover your place in the fusion story

Finally, you’ll explore the expanding fusion industry, emerging STEM careers, and pathways for learners and professionals interested in contributing to the future of clean power.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a clearer understanding of the science behind fusion and where your own journey into fusion energy could begin.

Skip to 0 minutes and 6 seconds Deep in the sun’s core, nuclear fusion reactions release vast amounts of energy. Harnessing this process, scientists and engineers are working to unlock a source of clean, near limitless energy for the future. In this 3 week course, you’ll explore the physics behind nuclear fusion from the extreme conditions required for nuclei to fuse to the complex behavior of plasmas, the fourth state of matter. You will discover the 2 main approaches to fusion power, magnetic confinement fusion, using powerful electromagnetic fields to contain superheated plasma, and inertial confinement fusion, using high energy lasers to trigger reactions in tiny fuel capsules. Importantly, you will discover the reality of building a fusion power plant.

Skip to 0 minutes and 52 seconds The challenge of designing materials that can withstand extreme heat loads, powerful, magnetic fields, and intense neutron bombardment, and the massive engineering hurdles required to ignite, sustain, and contain a star here on earth. Join our world-leaning experts as we bridge the gap between theory and implementation. You’ll analyze real world data and explore the technical challenges standing between us and commercial fusion. You’ll learn about the prototype power plants and technologies here in the UK, and hear from individuals about their careers in the fusion industry. So join us for exploring fusion energy, powering the future and get involved in the fusion story.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

    Introduction to Fusion

    • Welcome!

Time for some introductions to the course and each other before we start learning.

    • Why fusion?

Explore fusion's role in the global energy mix.

    • What is fusion?

Learn about the nuclear processes involved in fusion.

    • Principles of reactors

Learn about the fuel we are using for our fusion reactors here on Earth, key parameters we need to consider for the dimensions of our tokamaks, and the approaches to fusion.

    • Fusion progress to date

Get up to speed with the history of fusion reactors, and scientists' progress to date.

    • Closing thoughts

Wrap up the week with some closing thoughts.

  • Week 2

    Plasma Physics for Fusion

    • Introduction

This week, we will learn about the two main approaches to fusion energy: magnetic confinement fusion and inertial confinement fusion. We will learn about the challenges of confining plasmas, the fourth state of matter.

    • (MCF) Towards a tokamak

Learn the key terms 'breakeven', 'ignition', and 'gain'. Discover the latest tokamaks.

    • (MCF) Plasmas for magnetic confinement fusion

Learn about the plasma physics which allows us to confine plasmas using magnetic fields.

    • (ICF) Physics of compression

Learn about the basic principles of inertial confinement fusion, terms 'burn', 'ignition', and 'gain'.

    • (ICF) Making compression happen

Now, we implode our fuel, and learn about what instabilities this may cause. Then, we look at the National Ignition Facility and some of its exciting recent results.

    • Closing thoughts

Wrap up week 2 as we reflect on our new knowledge of the plasma physics required to make fusion happen.

  • Week 3
