Powerful Women and the Principles of Feminist Transformational Leadership
Explore transformative leadership strategies from a feminist perspective
Guided by experts in gender and development studies, this three-week course will introduce you to feminist transformational leadership theory and practice.
You’ll investigate the core principles of feminist transformational leadership and learn to lead in a way that is inclusive and empowering. You’ll discover how to reframe traditional, gendered definitions of leadership and gain the skills to put this leadership style into practice.
Examine the achievements of exemplary women leaders
Drawing from the experiences of female leaders and activists, you’ll explore how feminist transformational leadership has contributed to their success.
You’ll evaluate the mindsets and approaches of powerful women including Indira Gandhi, Madeleine Albright, and Peggy Antrobus, learning how feminist transformational leadership helped them make their mark on the global stage.
With this knowledge, you’ll be able to develop your own leadership style, influenced by the work of internationally recognised female leaders.
Learn to lead with a focus on social justice and ethical practice
Feminist transformational leaders have a responsibility to advocate for sustainable development and environmental conservation.
Using real-world case studies, you’ll learn to employ a range of leadership strategies that positively impact both people and the planet.
Plan your visionary action as a transformational leader
Bringing together your learning from previous weeks, you’ll identify the leadership qualities that you already possess and develop a leadership plan and style to effect positive change in your organisation or community.

Week 1
What makes leadership feminist and transformational?
Welcome to the course
This activity welcomes you to the course, gives a brief overview of the content and provides key concepts and definitions related to feminist transformational leadership.
A deeper look at some exemplary women leaders
In this activity several women leaders are discussed highlighting how they exemplified key values and principles of FTL, including an audio by Professor Patricia Mohammed on Janet Jagan, former Prime Minister of Guyana.
Feminist transformational leadership: Local, international and the diaspora
This activity crosses borders, describing activities by a diasporic organisation, the Jahajee Sisters in New York City, and American immigrant to Guyana Janet Jagan, who illustrate feminist transformational leadership.
Bringing it all together
This final activity summarises the week’s content, asks you to reflect on your learning and previews Week 2.

From capitols to watercourse ways
Sustainable Leadership and Environmental Conservation
This activity briefly reviews Week 1 and discusses the ways in which women leaders at the local and global levels promote sustainable development.
Inclusiveness and transparency in feminist transformational leadership
In this activity we explore strategies employed by political and business leaders to promote inclusiveness and transparency.
Feminist Mentorship
This activity focuses on feminist mentorship and its role in feminist transformational leadership.
Bringing it all together
In this activity you will reflect on the strategies you learned and discuss what you found most useful for you. We also review Week 2 and preview Week 3 where you will prepare to become a feminist transformational leader.

Building your feminist transformational leadership tree
This activity focuses on helping you to map out your guiding values, personal qualities, goals, strategies, skills and resources needed for mobilising feminist transformational leadership.
Preparing to lead
This activity will reinforce the importance of feminist values in feminist transformational leadership and the need for action to be based on a clear vision grounded in those values.
Bringing it all together

Who is the course for?
This course is designed for anyone interested in social justice, social change, and how to use core principles of feminist and transformational leadership in their careers.
It’s suitable for men and women at any stage of their career, including senior managers who want to upskill or expand the scope of their current leadership approach, as well as anyone with aspirations of leadership.
Who will you learn with?
I am Lecturer and Head at the IGDS, The UWI STA. I research interpersonal interaction, human communication conflict, social media, gender & ethnic identities, mental health & GBV, & Culture Studies.
I have worked in higher education for 25+ years in teaching, curriculum development and quality assurance. I specialise in Gender Studies, including Masculinities, Gender-based Violence and Religion.
I am Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, The UWI, St. Augustine Campus. I'm involved in feminist transformational leadership and social justice training and research.
Dr Dalea Bean is a Caribbean historian and gender specialist working in both fields for over 15 years. As a teacher/researcher she has dedicated her professional life to educating for social change
