Through this course we will explore how type 2 diabetes is managed through exercise, nutrition and medications. We will also hear from the practitioners in the field to expand our understanding.

  • the contemporary, independent role of the diabetes educator and their role as an integral part member of an interdisciplinary team, working with people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs.
  • current clinical and self-management strategies for people with diabetes.
  • knowledge of the current evidence to explain the principles of physical activity and nutritional management for people with different types of diabetes and various treatment regimens.
  • the pharmacological properties and clinical evidence for current anti-diabetic therapies and medication delivery technologies for managing diabetes in specific client groups.
  • the causes, clinical manifestations, management and prevention of acute complications and diabetes-related emergencies.
  • knowledge of the current evidence to create a tailored diabetes management plan for individuals with diabetes at specific life stages.

Dr Virginia Hagger is a RN-CDE, who has worked in the diabetes field as a clinician, program manager and researcher. She is the Course Leader for the Grad Cert in Diabetes Education.
