Study industry and sector influences on an organisation

This course aims to enable you to develop your knowledge of the industry and sector environment, how it impacts an organisation’s profitability, and how to analyse the attractiveness of an industry.

You will also have the chance to explore the internal environment and how resources and capabilities can be developed to compete in seemingly unattractive industries.

What topics will you cover?

  • Classification of industries and sectors according to industry types and analytical tools to perform industry analyses
  • The 5-Forces framework and how to apply it in order to assess the attractiveness of an industry or sector
  • The industry life cycle stage and the dynamic nature of industries
  • The resource-based view (RBV) and how it contrasts with the positioning school
  • The value of the VRIO framework to assess an organisation’s sustainable competitive advantage
  • Organisation’s ability to develop internal and external capabilities
  • How value chain and value system analyses are used to maximise profit margins

  • Apply Blue Ocean thinking to identify alternative strategic options
  • Critically discuss the resource-based view (RBV) as a concept and contrast it with the positioning school
  • Apply the RBV to assess an organisation’s internal environment using the VRIO framework
  • Analyse an organisations ability to develop internal and external capabilities
  • Apply the value chain analysis to assess an organisation’s activities to identify strategic option
