Explore maintenance engineering basics, and see why it’s essential to industry

Maintenance of company equipment, procedures, and budget has always been important to ensuring optimal business performance.

However, it has moved on from the trial-and-error approach used in the beginning of the twentieth century. Modern maintenance engineering involves applying engineering principles to optimise company equipment, budget, and procedures.

On this three-week course, Luleå University of Technology will introduce the science, management, and other principles you need to be a maintenance technician in the 21st century.

Learn maintenance engineering and technology basics

The course begins with a thorough review of what maintenance engineering is, why it’s important, when it should be performed, and the tools and technologies it uses.

The material is presented through practical and easy-to-understand examples, and you’ll find it extremely helpful whether you’re a new learner or a practiced maintenance technician.

Understand and preserve reliability/maintenance balance

Once you’re comfortable with the basic concepts, you’ll explore the relationship between reliability and maintenance, including how to measure and evaluate these key performance indicators.

With the insights that you gain, you’ll appreciate not only how maintenance impacts reliability, but also the production costs and impacts of maintenance failures.

Study with leading maintenance experts

Luleå University of Technology is known for developing the skills required to be a maintenance engineer as academic disciplines, in close collaboration with modern industry.

The course educators are also well-respected in the maintenance engineering field, and will further ensure that you are engaged and supported throughout your learning experience.

Skip to 0 minutes and 7 seconds Everyone has heard about maintenance. But what does it mean? Why is it important?

Skip to 0 minutes and 15 seconds Do you know that every product or structure is unreliable in the sense that it degrades with age usage and eventually fails. Humans can be an important cause in this context. The consequences of failure may vary from a mere inconvenience to something serious. Maintenance actions are executed to avoid the failures and associated consequences. In the past, maintenance actions were mainly of the corrective type until the middle of the last century when preventive maintenance was introduced.

Skip to 0 minutes and 54 seconds During this course, you will learn about what is this thing called maintenance through the use of simple examples from our daily lives.

Skip to 1 minute and 3 seconds The course will introduce you to some basic maintenance concepts, tools and technologies. This is an online course consisting of lectures, problem solving, discussions and interactive exercises. Welcome to this MOOC, which will take you on a journey to the wonderful world of maintenance engineering.

What topics will you cover?

By the end of this course you will:

  • See how science, technology, and engineering are linked, and how this interconnectivity applies to maintenance principles
  • Understand basic maintenance engineering concepts
  • Be familiar with the tools, technology, and industrial practices used by maintenance engineers and technicians when estimating maintenance requirements
