Explore the fundamentals of Portuguese conversation

Building on the content covered in Let’s Learn Portuguese Language, this two-week course from the Universiti Malaya will further your understanding of more complex grammar and pronunciation and take your conversational skills to the next level.

Develop your understanding of Portuguese sentence construction

Using relatable scenarios and useful vocabulary, you’ll learn how to ask questions, introduce family members, and use the correct pronouns when talking about people.

With this knowledge, you’ll be able to broaden your conversational repertoire, helping to develop relationships and get to know people better on your travels.

Learn how to conjugate verbs and use the definite and indefinite article

On this course, you’ll delve into Portuguese grammar, and learn how to use regular and irregular verbs, possessives, and definite and indefinite articles correctly in various contexts.

With these skills, you’ll be able to avoid miscommunication and confidently strike up conversations in formal and informal situations.

Improve your Portuguese pronunciation

Using audio clips, videos, and allotted practice time, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to perfect your pronunciation.

Skip to 0 minutes and 8 seconds Hi, Olá! My name Jamian Mohamad, and I am a Portuguese language instructor at the faculty of Languages and Linguistics Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Welcome to let us learn Portuguese language basic conversation skills. This course is a follow up to let us learn Portuguese language. Portugal is a lovely country with a diverse scenery of mountains, coasts and buildings. It is located in the south-western region of Europe and contains a rich history and culture. We will concentrate on fundamental conversation skills in listening and speaking in this session, using audio and dialogue. In addition, we will teach you how to communicate in formal and informal situations by using appropriate pronouns.

Skip to 1 minute and 5 seconds You could also learn to employ appropriate verbs, nouns, and interrogative words in a basic dialogue, as well as how to start and finish the conversations. Syllabus

  • Week 1

    Basic Portuguese Conversation

    • Getting Started

      Olá! Hello! Let's start our Basic Portuguese language class.

    • Irregular Verb

      We will introduce the irregular Portuguese verb to you in this session. The distinctions between the verbs 'ser' and 'estar', 'ter' and 'haver', as well as 'ir' and 'vir', will also be explored.

    • Regular Verb

      In this activity, we will demonstrate the irregular verb. In Portuguese, verb infinitives end in -ar, -er and -ir.

    • Conversation with Interrogative sentence

      In this activity, we will learn about Interrogative sentences which consist of question with interrogative word and question without interrogative word.

    • Conversation without Interrogative sentence

      We will practise asking questions without the use of an interrogative word. You can use a verb to initiate a conversation as well as the words não é, não és, and pois não in your query. Appreciate the provided audio chat!

    • Practices and weekly wrap up

      This activity is for you to practise and test your knowledge of what you have learned.

  • Week 2

    Introducing Family Members: articles, possessive and demonstrative pronouns

    • Name of family members

      This part focuses on both immediate and distant family members. At the same time, you might learn how to pronounce words that have various accents.

    • Things around you

      Animals, fruits and vegetables, transportation, and so on are all around us. These are the most important things for everyone. So let's learn and pronounce these words.

    • Family members: Definite and indefinite article

      In this activity, we will discuss definite and indefinite articles. Both are used to indicate nouns other than family members' names, including animals, people, countries, days, and so on.

    • Possessive determiners and Possessive pronouns

      The Portuguese possessives will be the main topic of this activit. We'll discuss about when to use definite and indefinite articles before possessive terms. We offer a sample of questions and answers to check your comprehension.

    • Family members: Possessives and demonstratives

      We shall explore the demonstrative words deeply. It depends on the speaker's and listener's situation. We also provide an audio conversation about family using articles, possessives and demonstrative words.

    • Weekly Wrap up

      This part allows you to practise your pronunciation. We will talk about your thoughts on pronunciation and the distinctions between your own language.
