      In this section we will introduce the key competencies of people management.

      Situational awareness and being able to perceive what skills and perspective is needed for a particular role is an essential component to developing as an effective manager. Let's take a closer look at this.

  • Week 2

    The changing roles and functions of management

    • Role of management in the past

      In this topic we will take a deeper look at the roles and functions of management throughout history.

    • Role of management in the present

      In this section we will look at ways management practices have changed to meet the needs of our ever-changing environment.

    • Managing in complex environments

      Let's look at the roles of managers in environments of complex change and disruption.

  • Week 3

    Taking a relational approach to management

    • The importance of self-awareness

      The first individual you should learn to manage is yourself, and this starts with self-awareness.

    • Soft skills management

      Often referred to as the soft skills of management, being able to connect with other human beings is not only an essential management capability, it is essential for a healthy, happy life.

  • Week 4

    Conversations for motivation and performance

    • Conversations for motivation

      In this topic we will continue with a human relations approach to managing people by moving from exploring relationships to taking a closer look at how managers can use conversations to motivate their teams.

    • Performance management

      Conversations around poor performance or a routine, administrative performance review are quite different in nature from motivational coaching conversations and should be kept quite separate.

    • Optional: apply your learning

      The following activities provide you with the opportunity to practice what you have learnt in this module in your workplace and professional practice.
