How it works
Navigating Financial Regulations and Preventing Money Laundering
This course has been certified by the CPD Certification Service as conforming to continuing professional development principles. Find out more.
Follow risk, investigate red flags, and strengthen compliance decisions
Every transaction tells a story.
Most are routine — some signal elevated risk. A small number may indicate fraud, sanctions breaches, or attempts to move illicit funds through legitimate financial systems.
On this practical course, you’ll develop the skills needed to navigate modern financial compliance and anti-money laundering (AML) obligations.
You’ll learn how organisations identify risk, investigate suspicious activity, and build compliance programmes that can withstand regulatory scrutiny.
Follow the trail from regulation to real-world decisions
Begin by understanding the global frameworks that shape compliance programmes.
You’ll work through FATF recommendations, AML compliance obligations, regulatory expectations, and the principles behind a Risk-Based Approach. Along the way, you’ll learn how organisations assess customer, product, geography, and channel risks to focus resources where they matter most.
Strengthen onboarding, screening, and financial crime controls
You’ll develop a practical understanding of KYC, customer due diligence, beneficial ownership verification, sanctions screening, politically exposed persons (PEPs), and digital onboarding processes.
You’ll also examine how compliance teams manage false positives while maintaining robust controls.
Turn investigations into defensible compliance action
Lastly, learn how transaction monitoring systems identify unusual behaviour, how investigators assess financial crime red flags, and how to document findings through defensible Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) and remediation plans.
By the end of the course, you’ll have built practical skills in AML investigations, compliance governance, and regulatory reporting while developing confidence in managing modern compliance challenges.

Navigating the Global Regulatory Landscape
Lesson 1 : The Global Regulatory Mosaic
Differentiate global standard-setters like FATF from local regulators such as FinCEN and EU AMLA, and map jurisdictional obligations to your organisation using AI tools.
Lesson 2 : Mastering the Risk-Based Approach (RBA)
Shift from a checkbox approach to a dynamic Risk-Based Approach by learning to design risk scoring models that classify clients and products into Low, Medium, and High risk for efficient allocation of compliance resources.
Lesson 3 : AI as Your Regulatory Co-Pilot
Use public Generative AI tools to interpret regulatory texts, summarise complex directives, and extract actionable compliance requirements without relying on a dedicated legal team.
Week 2

Frame compliance as a business enabler to secure budget and authority, define key roles like MLRO and Compliance Officer, and build a culture of compliance that meets regulatory governance expectations.
Lesson 5 : The Compliance Gap Analysis
Master the methodology of gap analysis by auditing existing controls against new regulations, using structured trackers to identify, log, and prioritise remediation before external regulators do.
Lesson 6 : Policy Engineering with AI
Transform compliance drafting with Generative AI by distinguishing policies from SOPs and using prompt techniques to rapidly create ISO-aligned documentation.
Week 3
The First Line of Defence: Smart KYC, CDD, and Screening
Lesson 7 : KYC 2.0 & Digital Onboarding
Modernise customer onboarding with KYC 2.0 by combining digital identity verification, automation, and data-driven due diligence for faster, compliant onboarding processes.
Lesson 8 : Unmasking the Ultimate Beneficial Owner (UBO)
Gain the skills to trace ownership behind corporate structures, identifying Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs) hidden within shell companies and complex layers to comply with the 25% ownership rule.
Lesson 9 : Smart Screening & False Positives
Tackle sanctions screening challenges by learning how to configure fuzzy matching thresholds, reduce false positives, and use Generative AI to efficiently review and resolve alerts against sanctions and PEP lists.
Week 4
Detective Controls: Transaction Monitoring, Investigations, and Reporting
Lesson 10 : Transaction Monitoring & Red Flags
Strengthen financial crime detection through transaction monitoring and red flag analysis, identifying suspicious patterns and behavioural anomalies to detect potential money laundering activities.
