Understand and implement the Sustainable Development Goals
The aim of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to protect human rights and preserve the natural world. On this four-week course from Taipei Medical University, you’ll delve into the 17 SDGs, and discover how they are being implemented all around the world.
From fairer water resources management to climate action and disaster resilience, you’ll learn how ethical thinking could help us shape a better future.
Investigate the relationship between water management and environmental protection
Besides being a basic human right, sustainable water management helps to protect ecosystems and improve urban living.
In Week 2 of the course, you’ll discover new and ethical approaches to managing water and agriculture. You’ll unearth the many connections between water resources management and environmental protection.
Explore sustainable economics, education, and healthcare
Next, you’ll expand your ethical thinking to consider innovations in sustainable economics, education, and healthcare.
You’ll analyse a host of new initiatives helping to improve access to vital services for individuals and communities.
Fight climate change and build disaster resilience
In the final week of the course, you’ll consider one of the greatest challenges to sustainable development. You’ll investigate the catastrophic impacts of climate change, and reflect on strategies for building disaster resilience.
By the end of the course, you’ll have an in-depth understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals, and a commitment to implementing them in your own life and community.

Week 1
SDG and Sustainability

Shape the Future that We Want
In our current living environment, it is important to understand the conditions facing the environment and to explore our own future life from different perspectives, namely economic, social, environmental, equity and peace.
Sustainable Development
The SDGs are about learning from nature in terms of water, energy, nutrition, microclimate, and biodiversity, and discussing the crises facing society in a linear way. We will then use circular thinking to balance society.
Week 2
The relationship between water resources and the environment.
From Ecosystem to Ecosystem: Exploring a New Paradigm for Water Resources Management
The importance of water management and new paradigms are explored, emphasizing that proper management of water resources can change the way of thinking from linear to systemic thinking and the study of how nature works.
Sustainable Water Resources Management and Protection
A shift from linear to systemic thinking, creating a circular flow to manage landscape, agriculture and cities, and to revitalize the economy, society and environment.

The Vicious Cycle of Climate Change
The vicious cycle of global warming and climate change is explored to understand its impact on the environment and society.
Tzu Chi Four Stages of Disaster Relief
We will introduce the four phases of Tzu Chi disaster management and use case studies to illustrate the importance of understanding the concept of resilience.
Final exam
We learned about environmental challenges in six units and explored ideal future life from various perspectives. We used linear thinking to balance societal needs and will assess understanding with a final exam.
